Had DSUCP installed, will uninstall and try a completely vanilla install.
I'm using the latest steam version, not entirely sure what version he's using, but apparently, it's a GOG version.
Crossing steam and gog versions may cause an issue, not sure. I wish it wouldn't, but there's probably something going on there. If you find an issue you can't fix, i'd just refund if you can, and play matching versions. Doesn't seem likely this should be an issue, but it's possible.
Also heard that win10 can cause issues, but I'm not actually sure. You may find info on this on the xwa upgrade forums.
I use the gog version and know it's stable; it was more stable before the steam version caught up with it. I'm also on win7, so i can't reproduce your OS errors. Personally, I prefer the gog version.
Also, there's a way to check versions; it's easy, but I forgot how off the top of my head; if you can't figure out how, I'll look it up. You should both have the same version on clean installs, i believe. If the clean install isn't the recent version, then maybe try the recent version.
