Multiplayer is peer-to-peer, so might be hard to find people to play with/against.
the singleplayer campaign is FAR better though. and if that isn't enough for you, there is also the X-Wing Total Conversion and TIE Fighter Total Conversion mods to consider... which makes the campaigns from X-Wing and TIE Fighter playable in X-Wing Alliance.
graphically, it's not as impressive as Squadrons, naturally... but with the Upgrade project, it also doesn't feel like a game from -99.
here's a guide for how to upgrade: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2387885233
I'm using an Logitech X-52 Pro full HOTAS setup right now.
the only problem might be that you actually have to know which keyboard key does what, before mapping it to a button... and if you've never played before, figuring out which buttons are the most important ones to have ready to use at a moments notice might be tricky.
google "X-Wing_Alliance_Reference_Card_Original_Layout" for all of the keyboard shortcuts.
Not that the whole game freezes, but the short cutscene of your ship docking with your home base basically lags horribly then stops. I am able to switch into the cockpit view to end the mission and go into the debriefing room, but the scene of your ship docking with your base doesnt complete itself, any suggestions?
it tends to fix all problems with crashes.
f you reinstall the game, play through a mission first without the upgrade... just to see that the base game itself isn't the problem.
though on the other hand, since the framerate drops apparently slowly to nothing, you could try changing some of the settings in the Babu Frik configurator. turning all of the shaders off, for instance.
I am by no means an expert though, so if these options do not help.. I would suggest going to https://xwaupgrade.com/ and their forum and ask for help there.
