Report a translation problem
Make sure that your controller is set as the prefered device in the windows gamecontroller settings.
Here is a chart on mapping to a 360 controller. So people must have gotten this working.

Im actually playing with a Xbox 360 controller. It works fine. But as POP already pointed out, the game was made for joysticks so dont expect any in depth configuration options ingame (e.g. Deadzones, sensitivity etc.) You remap he buttons though. I didnt even had to anything. The game automatically recognized my controller.
And I dont know if the base game already supports these controllers, or if its something the Xwing alliance upgrade mod does. But the you should install this mod anyways.
Buttons can be remapped in-game, but to map the extra stick, I use a program called rewasd.
