Troubleshooting Guide
EDIT* We've added (possible) solutions to start up in White screen and Not being able to place anything on the ground. Check below!

We wanted to see if we can give you some help with the most common problems people seem to are having. Please read through this post first and take all the steps before posting your issue. You can:

1. Check all of the information on this page to resolve the issue.
2. Use the “Search discussions” box to ensure your bug hasn't already been reported.

If it has been included in the forums already, then please feel free to post in that existing thread to add your supporting information/DxDiag.

If you've found a bug that’s not been reported yet, then please start a new thread in this sub forum using the template below:

OVERVIEW:
A brief description of the issue.

STEPS:
The steps required to reliably recreate the issue.
e.g.
1. Launch the game
2. Select Campaign
3. etc.

RESULT:
A description of what will happen after following the steps.

But before you do any of that make sure to check these items below as they are hte most frequent causes of any issues.

Disable your virus scanner
While virus scanners can detect virusses on your computer, they can often be very disruptive for the normal operation of non-threatening software on your computer. Before posting a bug report, please check if the bug still happens if you disable your virus scanner.

Known issues
  • If you have Commodo Internet Security Suite installed Turmoil will run in a sandbox and cannot connect with Steam. Because of this the DLC can not be loaded correctly.

Update your graphics driver

Turmoil is not a game with loads of fancy graphics, but we do use some Shaders that require up-to-date drivers and video cards. This has helped people, so please don't skip this step.

Visit your graphic card manufacturers' website and download and install the latest driver. If you have a laptop, you may have to visit the laptop manufacturer’s website in order to obtain the latest driver. Please note that these can often be a few revisions behind the reference driver. If may be worth contacting your laptop manufacturer to see if they plan to update the driver soon.

Verify integrity of game cache

If you are having problems getting the game to launch or you are experiencing random crashes, it might be that the game did not install correctly or that some of your local game data has become corrupt. Please use Steam’s validation check at least twice as it can sometimes, incorrectly, report no problems on its first pass. Steps:
1 ) Load Steam
2 ) From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
3 ) Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
4 ) Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.
5 ) Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.

Compatibility Mode

For a few people the game doesn't start properly in Windows 10. Sometimes it's an incompatiblilty problem with Windows 10. This is not a specific Turmoil error, it happens to more games. Try to run the game in a different compatibility mode. Here are the steps:

Here is how to run the game in "Compatibility mode"
1 ) Go to your Steam Turmoil Folder (C:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Turmoil)
2 ) Right click on Turmoil_PC_Full and select "Properties" from the drop down menu.
3 ) Click on the "Compatibility" tab
4 ) Click the box for "Run this game in compatibility mode for:
5 ) Choose "Windows 8" from the drop down.
If the game does not work in Windows 8 mode, repeat steps 1 - 3 and select "Windows 7" from the drop down.

Start up in White screen
Thanks to u/Sam:
The game launched in 1920x1080p as that white screen.

Anyways, I fixed it by accident a half hour ago, I opened the game, Window button+Tab, clicked the desktop button in the bottom right of the screen, then brought Turmoil back up and I could see the menu again. I closed the game and tried it a couple more times and it worked every time. Although, when starting/continuing a game, when in the town I could not move the cursor unless I did the fix again.

I set the resolution to fullscreen, and now the game opens and works perfectly.

Nvidia g-sync and start up in white screen
Original thread
Nvidia g-sync enabled monitors reportedly cause the game to start up in a white screen. Disable g-sync before starting Turmoil to fix the problem.

AMD: White screen/Freeze on startup
We have reports from some users that Turmoil freezes and displays only a white screen on startup. If this happens disable GPU scaling in the AMD Radeon Settings: https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/UnableToSetGPUScaling.aspx

Won't start in Windows 10 regardless of compatibility mode.

For some people there was a workaround. It might work for you:

Invalid App Configuration error or the DLC does not load

Restart Steam
When you have only just bought the DLC, Steam will sometimes not detect that you have it installed. Restart Steam then try starting Turmoil again.

Clear your Steam app manifest
Go to your Steam installation directory and open the steamapps folder. Delete the appmanifest_361280.acf file. Restart Steam and reinstall Turmoil. Try starting Turmoil again.

Clear your Steam local config
Go to your Steam installation directory and open the userdata folder. Open the numbered folder within. If there are multiple folders find your Steam ID by using https://steamid.io/lookup and entering the resulting steamID3. Open the config folder and delete localconfig.vdf. Restart Steam, then verify integrity of game cache for Turmoil (right click the game -> Properties -> Local Files -> Verify Integrity of Game Cache). Try starting Turmoil again.

Steam reinstallation
This one is a bit more thorough. Exit Steam. Go to your Steam installation directory and select everything except steam.exe, the steamapps folder and gamesaves. Delete all the other files. Now open Steam by clicking steam.exe and it will reinstall itself. Try starting Turmoil again.

Changed the save file?

Some players have tried to get some more cash by altering the save file. Unfortunately that has a probability of breaking the game. When it does, the only option is to delete the save file entirely and start again.

Segfault on Linux when using AMD graphics card

There are incompatibilities between some of the open source Mesa AMD drivers and the GameMaker runner. If you are using a graphics card of the HD 2000 series or the HD 3410 the game might work with hardware accelaration if you use:
R600_DEBUG="vs,ps"
You can enter this environment variable in the launch options found by right clicking a game -> Properties -> General -> Set launch options...

If you have another graphics card and still have a segfault you can likely get the game to run using:
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1
It is recommended to turn of antialiasing in the options menu to run the game at a steady framerate if you enable this setting.
