Yooka-Laylee
As a fan of modern collect-a-thons like Hat in Time and Mario Odyssey...
Is this game worth my time? I heard it got a bit of a negative rap due to sharing issues with older collect-a-thons (such as poor camera), how does it compare to those other two games?

wait for the DLC and then judge, DLC was promised did not came but a recent email suggest it is actually in the works and might come out, keep in mind that :playtonic: takes 5x the amount of time any other indie company needs to release something im spekulating on late 2022

I personally enjoyed it more than Hat in Time and have never played Odyssey, it's just the kinda game you'll love or hate

Its really fun, if you played banjoe-kazooie its more of the same. Hat in time I have trouble getting into, odyssey was a blast. Camera is sometimes an issue but that is true in almost every platformer. Buy it and play for two hours, if you dont enjiy it then stop and refund. The best way to know if you like something is to play it yourself.

It's not as good as Mario but it's a great game, especially if you like the old Banjo Kazooie games. It's more of the same, and it's as good as ever.

It got a negative rap due to Jon Tron and severe performance issues on the Xbone.

As a collectathon game, it's good.

What was actually the controversy with JonTron? He said something racist, and his Yooka-Laylee cameo got removed to 'avoid controversy'? Meanwhile, Hat in Time kept it in to 'avoid controversy', and that caused a broken base between YL and HiT?

No. It has none of the charm of Banjo-Kazooie, though you can see painfully clearly how hard it tried to imitate said charm. The levels are too large, lots of collectibles are strewn about in annoying hidden and random locations, rather than scattered along common paths connecting to each other that encourage exploration as you go (like BK did with musical notes), even after all the patches from community complaints, a lot of the minigames are just generally very unfun and poorly designed from the ground up, which isn't something a patch can fix, and lastly, a lot of corners were cut, which is weird because playtonic wasn't on a strict deadline. They could have extended the due date to make the game better, but instead released it before they should have. This is strongly evidenced by the developer commentary series they uploaded to youtube as a crowd funding stretch goal, and time and time again as they explain their line of reasoning for why a certain area is the way it is, you keep on hearing "it was good enough" and "we ran out of time" as though they understand what they are showcasing is lack-luster, and need to justify it somehow. Hell, in the very first level of the game, you hear this excuse for why an area simply loops you back out through another entrance, instead of taking you into the interior of a mountain like it looks like it would from the level design.

Yooka-Laylee was a massive disappointment for anybody who really understood why BK was special. It failed miserably to be a spiritual successor by trying in a very lame way to just carbon-copy random elements from BK, such as characters with cartoonishly large eyes, and silly voices, but it even failed on that front to a certain degree.
I guess that's the kind of product you can expect though, from an indie studio that will cut ties with a content contributor because they're guilty of the dreaded crime of political wrongthink on the internet. They weren't willing to go the necessary miles to make the game good, but they were quick to get political with their own IP before it had even come out, which annoyed everybody in their fanbase (who has a spine). I'm talking of course about the JonTron controversy they spawned. Since you asked: the gist is, JonTron goes on a live stream to have an impromptu "debate" with another fellow, he is asked loaded questions designed to vilify him, and ends up saying brutally honest statistics concerning immigrants, and I believe a few other opinions pertaining to minorities. Essentially JonTron did NOT back the politically correct bandwagon, and thus was blindly labeled a racist for it. When Playtonic discovered he had expressed non-PC opinions about immigrants, they removed his voice contribution from the game (which they had used to lure in crowd funding backers, mind you) and pulled the "We here at Playtonic welcome players from all cultures of blah blah blah we're so politically correct blah blah love and inclusivity and that's why we are distancing ourselves from hateful ideologies and blah blah sniffing our own farts, thank you and good night!" which made almost everyone pretty livid and disappointed, myself included.

Fortunately, it seems like Yooka-Laylee: Impossible Lair did it right. They didn't cut corners, they went above and beyond to make levels not seem longer or larger than they needed to be. They mulled over the controls carefully, there's a huge diversity of enemy types in that game as opposed to this one where everything behaves the same and looks slightly different, there's secrets and minigames that are actually fun and actually function correctly, unlike how Yooka-Laylee launched, basically they blew it completely in the 3d platforming revival, but nailed it in the 2d platforming revival. They couldn't do Banjo-Kazooie ANY justice, but they did Donkey Kong Country justice tenfold, is at least what I hear.
If you want a 3d-platformer, steer clear of Playtonic's attempts until they wise up, get over themselves, and do it right. A Hat In Time is worlds better, even if the devs over there also have a bit of a political agenda that they squeeze into the game. Just strictly speaking from a gameplay perspective, if you liked A Hat In Time, you won't like this. This is worse than AHIT in almost every way in how it was fundamentally designed. If you really wanna see what Playtonic are capable of, just try Impossible Lair instead. I've personally been so disappointed with Playtonic that I'm not going to bother with any of their future titles out of principle, but from everything I heard that reached me, they actually did Impossible Lair right, and seem to have learned a great deal after the joke that was this; their first title Yooka-Laylee.

Unlike other indie games, they take their time so the dlc will come out working right :\

LOok i LOVE hat in time, but that game isn't fun to play.
This one is slightly more fun to play.
I also didn't care for banjo kazooie, so take that for what you will.

As someone who initially hated Yooka Laylee upon my first playthrough, and on my second absolutely loved it enough to 100% three times in a row, I can absolutely reccomend Yooka Laylee.

I'll admit, I got filtered HARD by this game. It's challenges were difficult and the controls weren't immediately as fluid as something like Banjo or Mario. Though this game controls excellently for what it is. They made it as tight as they could and it's incredibly rewarding to go back and play this game over and over again just wondering how I had such a hard time with it.

Now there are a few flaws. The Rextro Minigames, little side missions that amount to arcade games, are not fun at all. You have to play them twice in a row to get two separate collectables and it feels like padding. There are 5 overall and only 1 is really frustrating. The Kartos minigame, a DKC style minecart side mission, can get a little frustrating, especially with the boss tied to it. If I were you, I'd be prepared to do these many many times to get the hang of the controls and memorize the stage layouts. Then there's this one mission at the end in the Hub World involving going down a slide avoiding obstacles, it feels unpolished almost. It nearly broke me the first time through. The last point of contention is the camera even though it's not that bad. It functions to keep you in the middle of the screen at all times and any and all obstructions will automatically choose an angle to which you have no control over. With how open this game is though you'd have to go out of your way to make it to where visibility is an issue. The camera is finicky, but not so horribly flawed that it makes the game unplayable. That's where the negatives end, for me at least. I didn't mind that the boss battles weren't anything special, besides that being the final boss which goes on for way too damn long, or that the writing is a bit too self-aware for my liking.

"If you like Banjo Kazooie, you'll like this" is a bit of a generic response to this because this is obviously going for something different. So, if you like
>A colorful and vibrant world filled with witty characters and dialogue
>Atmospheric and catchy tunes
>Platforming challenges that require mastery of the controls
>Sufficiently large enough worlds to explore and memorize
>A slew of unique abilities that are well utilized, making use of every single one
>Collecting every single thing in a game

Then yes, you'll like this. Go in with an open mind, and have fun.

I mean, I love that I'm getting all these responses. Guess I should have mentioned that I've already bought the game, and nearly 100%'d it. Only the Kartos missions really annoy me, everything else is great. Might play through Odyssey again after this.
