Is this game really bad or it's all boomers talking loud saying nothing?

Well to be honest I'm 50 50 on it. Some levels are really nice and some aren't. For me I played Banjo Kazooie and wanted a spiritual successor so I backed the game. However this game has two noticeable issues.

A lot of areas in levels are pretty empty and barren. Most likely because of how big and expansive the maps are they didn't really have a lot of options to fill some of them up. Smaller condensed levels would have been a lot more enjoyable in my opinion.

The pacing of the game is pretty bad near the end because a lot of upgrades lets you bypass some puzzles.

I still think this game is okay but I wouldn't really find myself recommending it for full price just because I was a bit disappointed. However I do believe their second game is probably worth a grab. I just have really mixed feelings about this game.

The main thing everyone else expected is for this game to get some post launch support with DLC which never really came. Keeping in mind there was a stretch goal reached that stated it would give all backers DLC for free. Which may be a contributing factor.

Its a good game. I really enjoyed it. 8.5/10. Minigame controls are not very good tho. I bought the game full price and think that it was worth it. Personally I dont understand a lot of the criticism the game got. Lots of people complained about the camera and the world being empty but I barely ever had any issues with the camera and I never thought the world was empty. Its funny because Zelda Breath of the Wild is regarded as this masterpiece of a game but I think BotW has the most bland, barren, and empty wasteland of a game world ive seen in years. Yet here is Yooka-Laylee that gets a number of bad reviews over a supposed "empty" game world but I find the worlds so much more interesting to explore than BotW.

Boomers don't play video games, also this game is terrible.

There's no more 3d platformers like this, its a great throw back that isnt perfect but does well at what it set out to be.

I loved it and will play through again one day soon.

The only other game that comes close on PC is a hat in time.

I completed the game and can't say same. There is no levels there is worlds so no wonder devs created them with this scale. And they are actually packed with enemies puzzles and secrets after 5 hours of exploring each level I barely found 3\4 of pagies and other stuff. Swamp and casino wasnt great but at least jungle and space ocean worlds were pure kino.
Near the end because a lot of upgrades lets you bypass some puzzles - you talking about flying? It appears later and allow to bypass only some platforming but not puzzles. It brings feel of freedom to travel how player want it to just like in Super Mario 64 for me it's feature not flaw

this has 5 big and mostly empty worlds with the collectibles scattered without meaning sometimes in unlogical areas

the main collectibles are most of the time just grabbable completely going around intended puzzle and that puzzle is mostly non intruging jumpinjg to 1 or 2 plattforms sometimes hitting a switch

I'm nearly 5 hours in - on world 2 currently, whilst the game does have its flaws, most notably its camera (but its quite easy to look past that), it is actually really enjoyable :)

One of the reasons people complained about it is because the camera was really really bad at launch. There have been multiple updates since then and its definitely improved. I played it when it launched and hated it, mostly due to the awful camera.

That said, I'm replaying it now and there are still issues. The worlds are huge and the Pagies feel like they're in disconnected levels rather than the more cohesive worlds of Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie. There's also WAY too much dialogue. Even with the ability to skip dialogue, the amount of writing is absurd. And the quizzes in between levels are terrible.

It is definitely more enjoyable than it used to be though.

maybe once the promised kickstarter backed DLC drops it will be better in 2022 or later whatever devs made another game instead already

Well that's the funny thing. They never promised DLC they just said IF there was DLC all backers would get it for free if the milestone was reached. We reached the milestone so it makes me wonder if that was a factor in not getting any DLC.

I'd be perfectly content with like proper mod support or something to be honest.

they did say the DLC is in the works in a mail that was sent out to backers, that was probably 2 years ago or something the mail came like way before the retro tonic came out

This game was fine for what it was trying to be - a Banjo Kazooie successor, but I think the issue that I as well as many others had is that it suffers from a lot of the same problems as those games did only somewhat worse.

Personally, I feel like they should've not just taken notes from their older works, but also other games that have come out around that time as well as since then, almost like they recreated the old formula so much, but to a fault.

The inventory, for example. Neither of the Banjo games told you exactly which collectibles you've found, only how many. Same with DK64. By comparison, the Spyro games on PS1 and even Super Mario 64 told you exactly which collectibles you've found along with a hint for each one so you know which ones you found and what you still need to find, which would've been really helpful in a game like this that has about 25 pagies per level instead of 10 in Banjo or 6 in Mario.

That's where I felt like Yooka-Laylee fails where other indie games, including the Impossible Lair, succeeded. Not only using an older game as a base template for a new game, but also taking inspiration from other games as well.

Part of the magic about the worlds in Mario 64, Banjo 1 and all 3 Spyro games is that the levels felt big and expansive with a lot of exploration opportunities, but they really aren't. They're actually quite small in size, they just feel like massive worlds to explore due to ingenious design and careful layouts. Yooka-Laylee doesn't have that magic, hence why exploring the worlds can get kind of boring a lot of the time. Also, what happened to the warp pads from Tooie?

Again, the reason why the quiz game in both Banjo games felt so special and exciting was that they only did it once in the entire game, which was right at the very end. Yooka-Laylee shows what happens when it's done four seperate times.

All this is coming from someone that never grew up with Mario 64 or any of the Banjo games, only to experience them for the first time a few years ago.
