I don't think it really looks like Nintendo 64, though. Too many polygons on characters and environment, and the textures are too high resolution (even if it's low res for today's standards).

Well remember that's from July 10th and they've stated it's a work in progress. My guess is what ever they're working on is moderate in size and will ship with the 64-bit tonic.
Couldn't tell you when though we've received like 8 more updates since that email and it's mostly regarding the Switch version if I recall correctly.
