(World 1) Water Switch?

How do you press the switch in the water on World 1 (the one the vent is blowing towards)? I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to dive far enough to hit it before I'm blown away.

Does this perhaps require an ability I haven't yet unlocked?

You will need two abilities for that, stomping (which you get in world 1 iirc) and something you get later in the game (before world 3).

Pretty sure you need the ability to take on the characteristics of what you eat, so that you can use the cannon balls to your advantage. You get that near the beginning of world 2.

Yes you need an ability you get a little later on, a few stages are like this so if you can't get to something leave it till later on when you have more moves.

I thought that might be it, but there's nothing I can eat close to that area. The only thing I've seen is the cannonballs way up on top of the temple.

It's not that ability, it's a different one you need walk under water in a bubble

I've actually had one or two that weren't that (like the sensor robot in World 1... I thought I needed some move to defeat it and unlock the chest, when the solution didn't involve defeating it at all), so I wanted to ask just to be extra sure. :-)
