I feel dumb. Why is the solution to have all three sliders in the middle?

You're not the only one. I definitely went WTF!? But maybe since the sun, moon, and planet all have to be aligned to cause the eclipse, then all three switches have to be lined up in the middle (or as close as possible) to match. That's my guess anyway.

My guess is the sliders control the machine keeping the lizards incubated. It must be powered down to let them out. When in those positions, the power drops to just one light indicator each.

That's the very first thing I did. Power it down. It worked and I was very surprised.

That's what the eclipse was supposed to do, but the moon was destroyed.

They all have to line up because that represents the alignment of the sun, moon, and planet for the eclipse to take place. Not sure why they all have to be in the middle. Is that the only position where they all have the same amount of bars as each other?

I spent a few minutes thinking about the puzzle. The fact that all the sliders should be in the middle is of course very simple. I also see the first mission more as a tutorial. Consider the conversations between the characters. And by that I don't mean answers like “I hate snow, it's cold.” These are more detailed and hints are often given - which would be necessary to solve the puzzle. At least that's how it is in the German version and with the typical way the characters of the series perform something or their behavior is portrayed.

The fact that the planets have to be brought into harmony in order to establish peace even sounds logical after all the conversations. The population is peace-loving. Even the Klingons (fake ones, of course) only shoot at you with stun. The only challenge is the stone that can kill someone. Afterwards you find the wounded man again to help and show your good will. So you can say it's all about balance and this is also reflected in the puzzle.

The other puzzles in later missions are much more difficult. And we're talking about a time when not everyone could just look on the internet or quickly ask a friend via WhatsApp how to solve the puzzle.
