Library Puzzles Explanation?

I solved all the library puzzles except 2, the cryptography one I just redid till i got it right on the 3rd try and i looked up the solution to the Hyrulian relic. but even after seeing the answer I'm still not sure how that solves the puzzle and how i was supposed to be able to do it without help, can anyone explain it to me?

First symbol is made of 1 part.
Second symbol is made of 2 parts.
Third symbol is made of 3 parts.
...
How many parts should there be in the [insert number]th symbol ?

Relic :
If you are on a x-square with its arrow pointing [direction], go x steps that way. For instance, if you are on a 1-square pointing right, go right one time and then follow what is on this next square. Do it again, and again, and again, until you are in the final square. Now here's the question : which square is the very first one ?
