Is there any way at all to increase your HP during card games or is it always stuck at 20?

There's no way. It's more than enough.

Once you get better cards the other player having twice your HP stops being a big deal.

Thanks for the responses; that was, more or less, a question of idle curiosity. Now that I'm much deeper into the game, I realize that I was probably just challenging the wrong people too quickly. I've been gaining some higher quality cards, and it's going easier for me now.
