For crying out loud, the standalone version of "Plants vs. Zombies" runs perfectly on my ancient Sony 2001 VAIO XP 256MB RAM 800MHz laptop, and I suspect it has a damaged Operating System no less!
Are you getting any sort of error message? If so, what, if any, is the code given (e.g. "c0000005")?
This is a wild guess, but you can download these, place them in the folder with the Plants Vs. Zombies EXE file, and then try the game:

Do NOT place these in the "System32" folder of your computer- just where the game's EXE file is. I have used these and they have gotten many games and at least one application working on my old (very old) Sony laptop, in spite of what I suspect is a corrupted Operating System. Remember, these files are NOT meant to replace anything in your computer's Operating System.
