I got the problem like this when I tried to start PvZ. I also tried some different versions, such as Origin and Cracked version, but the same error always happens. I searched it on google but there's no solution works. Finally, I found one myself and it worked to me.
Now I wanna show you guys how to fix if you have the same error

Just do these below steps:
- Open Registry Editor (WindowsKey + R, type "regedit" and press Enter)
- Go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SteamPopCap\PlantsVsZombies".
- In the right area, look for "Screenmode", then double-click on it and change the value from 1 to 0. If it doesn't exist, create it new by right-mouse click, choose "New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value"
- Launch the game to check if it works
