Fatal Error!!!

Need help to fix it, i´ve been trying to get in touch with PopCap and seems to be that
there´s no way to do it, it happens when i try to open the game, can anybody help?

I have the same error!! I can't start the game

Have you tried opening it in windowed mode? You can set it in the registry, I can give you the instructions if you like?

I figured I'd give the instructions anyway since someone could need it in the future.

Go to start menu, type in "regedit" (without the quotations) into the search bar at the bottom and start up the registry editor.

Once it's open, go to HKEY_Current_User > Software >SteamPopCap > PlantsVsZombies and a list should be to the right. In that list, find where it says "Screenmode", double click it and change the setting from 1 to 0.

Also, for those of you who can get the game to launch but it's just a black screen with audio in the background, a quicker way to enable windowed mode is to launch the game, press ALT and Enter (together) and close the game. Relaunch and it should be in windowed mode.

followed the steps but there is not "Screenmode", what should i do then?

nope, it only shows predetermined, InProgress, LastGameExecuted, LasGamePID, RegExData, TimesExecuted and TimesPlayed, i did click on PlantsVsZombies, what now? :(

I'm not sure then, I just noticed from your error message it looks like you're on Windows 8? I'm on Windows 7 so it's probably different because of that. I found a problem similar to yours so you could try the solution here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/3590/discussions/0/846942156047931700/

If that doesn't work I would try troubleshooting the following:

1. Verify integrity of game files

2. Uninstall, reinstall

3. Run in compatibility mode for earlier versions of Windows (XP service pack 2 is probably your best bet but no harm in playing around with other versions).

It's probably something to do with the resolution though, some of these older games have trouble displaying or even running at all - I have to play PvZ in windowed or it won't work.

Thank you sooo much! It's screen mode when I ran it for the first time, but after I set it to windowed mode I can't return screen mode any more. Following your instructions, I started up the registry editor and changed the setting from 0 to 1 but not from 0 to 1, and then I successfully ran the game in sreen mode.

I have the same problem. ScreenMode does not show up in the registry settings. I can change to WIndowed Mode using Alt-Enter very quickly after starting the game but it still crashes, and still crashed if I then start it again. I feel that Steam should not be selling games that simply don't work, even if they are cheap. I am using Windows 10

Can you give a screenshot of what shows up instead? I'm not familiar with Windows 10 but might be able to see an alternative option.

And I agree, I've had issues with multiple older games - windowed mode usually solves it which is still not exactly a great solution. I'm stuck trying to fix another game right now that windowed isn't working for.

Hm no sorry I can't help there. To be fair, if Alt-Enter didn't work, changing it to windowed mode through the registry probably wouldn't help anyway. Did you try the earlier solution I linked to? https://steamcommunity.com/app/3590/discussions/0/846942156047931700/

Ah that's a shame. You can try the mobile version maybe, but it's a money grabber from what I hear.
