Every time the game just opens the DOSbox window for about 5 seconds without anything in it, then crashes.
Tried to fiddle with config, with no result, but I also have no idea what settings you actually should use.

Tried to launch it directly. It says "Cannot launch this on your computer. Ask the developer for the compatible version" (roughly translated from Russian).

I had the same issue. DosBox load for 3 seconds, then game resets back to the main home screen

Poked around a little in the game files, found out that shortcuts there are screwed up - they point to non-existent folders.
Still haven't fixed the issue, but maybe there are other bad links in there?

Found out what the problem was. Turns out its trying to fullscreen the app and it can't because it doesn't have a resolution for our monitors. The game has a max res of 1280x960. To get arround this you can either set your monitor to that resolution or switch it off from fullscreen mode.

to turn off fullscreen mode head to the folder
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Control 3\DOSBOX

then open the file
dosboxSC3.conf
in notepad

and find the option
fullscreen=true

and change it to
fullscreen=false

save the file then it should open and play via the play button in steam

I tried using this method, and while im able to now get it to load, i get sound, but only a black screen. Ive lowered the screen resolution, but no change. Am i missing something?

Hm, haven't encountered this problem.
Have you changed "fullscreen" options too?

hey, great tip. thank you. i took it a step further and changed the resolution settings. this screen only goes to 768 so that 960 is likely what caused the problems.

fullresolution=1280x768
windowresolution=800x600

it was 1280x960 for each for the Star Control 1 and 2 folders. i haven't gotten to 3, yet.
