only right eye active on our HTC Vive (left eye stays black)
Hello,

We only have the right eye active (pixels on) on the right eye of our Vive, the left eye stays off (or at least looks like it's off).

VRMonitor considers the HMD green but we can see only through right eye.

When headset plugged with no app running :
- right eye white
- left eye black (like switched off, no light at all)

When doing room calibration :
- right eye works (we can see an active base and the ground following head movement)
- left eye stays black

Does somebody experience a similar problem ? Is it a software or hardware problem ?

Our display configuration on windows 7 :
- display ID 1 (on the right) : HTC Vive
- display ID 2 (on the left) : 24'' Dell Monitor

Any help or suggestion is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks,
Nicolas.

I've seen something similar once. It turned out to be a bad HDMI cable running between the breakout box and the headset. What if you try again with a very short ( < 2 ft) HDMI cable?

I just updated HMD firmware and dongle firmware (but not controller or lighthouse base station firmware), and now I have only the right eye displaying anything [a 2D speckle pattern -- not anything related to my actual desktop], and the left eye is black.

For reference, this should not be a hardware problem - my hardware has been working fine prior to today, and the HDMI cables are fine.

Rebooting made both eyes (screens) turn back on, though :)

Layla, I was seeing that exact same problem earlier today but simple power cycle of just the HMD made it go away for future reference.

had that several times, reboot the box & restart the VRMonitor and you are fine again. have the feeling this happens when pulling on the cables entering the box so they lose contact shortly

Thank you all for your help, I already tried several cable combinations but I'll try more. I will keep you updated when it's done (and hopefully working ;-) ).

Thanks, it worked.

I removed the short HDMI cable provided which was plugged to a DVI/HDMI adapter (because my video card output is DVI) and I replaced it with a DVI/HDMI cable (which is longer by the way).

I have both eyes of the Vive active now :-)

Hey guys, I've tried swapping various HDMI cords in and out between the headset and box - PC, to no avail! Any other suggestions? Only received the unit today, it was fine absolutely fine for 30 minutes or so, now the left eye won't come on at all.

Hi Watermelon,

for us it was a problem of finding the right cable. I would advise to start with using only the cables provided by Valve first. Once it works again, label them. I purchased several of them to find some cables longer than the one provided whihc work with the Vive, I will start a new thread "Vive extension cables" to indicate the one I purchased.

I forgot, as mentioned in the thread, do not add adapters if you have a DVI or DisplayPort connection, find a cable with your connector on one side and HDMI on the other side to avoid to weaken the signal too much.

I've also been having the issue where the left eye is black and the right eye is just a bright white noise patter. I power cycle the HMD and that seems to fix it for me.

I want to caution people to be very careful with using cables other than the ones supplied by us. Longer cables or ones that aren't high quality might exceed the length limits for the HDMI or USB drivers and cause these kind of failures.

I HAVE had success using a slightly longer cable from the video card's HDMI output to the breakout box. But if you experience any problems with it please go back to the supplied cables to make sure that the alternative ones are not causing the problem.

What if we actually do have a bad cable? I was getting a red light on the hmd so I started checking cables. Turns out the hdmi between the box and hmd is the problem.

Hi Nicolas, i am having the same problem... and have made a few different purchases trying to resolve it. Right now my graphics card has DVI and Mini HDMI. So i have a min to regular HDMI adapter and i am running into the same issue. I wanted to try the DVI to HDMI next, would you mind linking which cable you got it to work with?
