Headphone jack on the Vive
I'm assuming the headphone jack cable that hangs off the back of the Vive outputs audio coming through HDMI?

My HDMI port just went out of my 970 (never had that happen before on a graphics card. It actually handshakes and identifies the attached display, but will not output video. Definitely not the HDMI cable, either. Very weird!).

Anyhow, how I am using a DisplayPort - HDMI cable for the Vive and it works fine, but I'm pretty sure DisplayPort can't output audio, right?

Is there any other way to get audio to the headphone jack on the Vive?

I've heard that it's actually a DAC in the headset and audio is via USB, but that is just what I have heard. There is always the possibility to use USB headphones with the accessory-port on the headset or just wireless headphones.

DP is supposed to support audio, but it's up to the implementation in your hardware if it does or not, at least that is what Google tells me :P

Interesting... how do I get the audio device to output through USB? I plugged some headphones into the Vive and wasn't able to get any audio out of them. This was when I was using my HDMI port before it broke. I assumed I needed to enable HDMI audio (I had it disabled purposefully before so it wouldn't try to use my TV's speakers when I was using it as a monitor)

If it's like any other USB audio device it should show up in your list of audio hardware, just set it to default audio device, maybe.

Yes, it's actually even labeled "HTC-VIVE" in the sound control panel. Fantastic, thanks!

Yeah, not having my headphone wire attached to my tower is a world of difference... so much better.

Display port can output audio. The new interface boxes ("Pre" and beyond) include a mini displayport input so you don't need a separate converter.

Yeah I have the pre with the mini port, it's just that I use the same cable between the Vive and my TV and the TV is HDMI.

Just to get it straight, is the Vive headphone jack getting audio from the display port or from USB?

The Vive has a USB audio device in it to support the microphone. I believe the audio *output* of that is also connected to the headphone jack. So you would hear audio from both sources (HDMI/DP and USB).

You can choose which device (of any of your audio devices) will be used in the Audio tab of the vrmonitor settings panel.
