Unity OpenVR Unknown Error 126

Was trying to setup a Unity VR project while waiting for Vive to ship. After installing Unity 5.4.0f3, SteamVR, and adding the SteamVR plugin to my project.

When running any scene (empty, SteamVR Plugin demo scene, Unity VR sample scenes), I get the following error:

VR: OpenVR Error! OpenVR failed initialization with error code Unknown error (126): "Unknown error (126)"!

My first guess is that this is because I do not have a device connected, since I do not own a VR headset yet. In that case, however, I would expect much clearer error logging with that case.

Any thoughts?

I just double checked, and that error code has a debug string associated with it, so my guess is that your SteamVR runtime is just out of date. Are you opted into a specific branch?

It is indeed the lack of a device. Found this in a log file, it doesn't print in the editor:

Compositor failed to initialize.Compositor failed to initialize.VR: OpenVR Error! OpenVR failed initialization with error code VRInitError_Init_HmdNotFoundPresenceFailed: "Hmd Not Found Presence Failed (126)"!

Also, opted into the beta branch (as per Valve guide), Unity 5.4, latest SteamVR plugin.
