SteamVR games without RIFT - guide
VR tech is fairly new and people like me, are hesitant to go drop $600+ dollars on something that may be utter nonsense. If you, like me, were fooled by grade A garbage in the not so distant past (virtual boy, from nintendo is a prime example of VR leaving a bad taste in my mouth) then you PROBABLY want to at least TRY VR before you drop that large sum of cash. All of this said, I have myself an Iphone6, and a $19.99 VR mobile headset I got from best buy called Utopia 360. All you will need to give steam VR games a TRY is basically any more current iphone OR android, and a cheap VR headset like I got. A lot of people like google cardboard, but im impatient and wanted to try it right away.

It doesnt really matter what VR headset you buy, because all it does is hold your phone. You NEED to get a headset though because it comes with lenses that actually make the games "3d" (you cant just make one yourself. not easily anyway). Ok enough of that heres how I managed to use my iphone and a cheap VR headset to get steam VR games working.

Once you have your VR headset, head on over to http://trinusvr.com/ and download the application onto your PC. After you download that to your PC, you are going to need to onto your phone and go to the app store or google play store, and download the Trinus VR app to your phone.

Once you have the app downloaded onto your phone AND pc, open up the program you downloaded onto your PC. Click the little gear settings thing in the program to get to the options section, and then select "advanced mode". I found that for my personal home wifi connection, I could set the image size to ULTRA and it works just fine. I DID have to slide the compression slider all the way down, otherwise it would lag like crazy. I set my capture mode to fast. You may have to adjust these settings for your personal use. After that, change the sensor mode to FreePieIO. Now click the sensor tab at the top. I had to turn the yaw pitch and roll ALL the way up to have it work right. But adjust it to your liking once you actually get in the game.

Now you need to make a change to steams vr settings. To do this, open the file called steamvr.vrsettings (just use notepad) by default, that file SHOULD be in c:/programfiles/Steam/config

copy and paste this into that config (overwriting everything)

{
"jsonid" : "vrsettings",
"perfcheck" : {
"heuristicActive" : true
},
"steamvr" : {
"allowReprojection" : true,
"defaultMirrorView" : 0,
"directMode" : true,
"directModeEdidPid" : 26720,
"directModeEdidVid" : 1256,
"displayDebug" : true,
"forceReprojection" : false,
"showMirrorView" : false
},
"version" : "1"
}

save and close the file. The next thing you need to do is download the drivers to make this thing actually work. You can download the drivers here - {BAĞLANTI SİLİNDİ}

extract that to steam/steamapps/common/steamvr/drivers

now, download this .dll {BAĞLANTI SİLİNDİ}

extract it to anywhere you want, but the easiest place is going to be just dumping it directly into c:/ because you are doing to have to use the command prompt for the next part. So if you arent good with Command Prompt I highly suggest you just put that .dll directly into c:/ and not inside any folders.

open up the command prompt now (just press windows key + r and type CMD). If you put the file directly into C:/ then just type cd/ and press enter

if you put it somewhere other than c:/ then i assume you know what your doing and go ahead and navigate to that folder.

Now enter the following command EXACTLY as shown here : rundll32 TrinusCompositor.dll,inject

Once you run the command, it will appear as if nothing has happened. You can close the command prompt.

And now you are ready to fire up the steam VR. On your phone, open the trinus app, and press the little triangle that is in the middle of the screen. It will highlight purple and that means your phone is searching for a server. On your computer, go to the trinus VR program, and click the same triangle. Your phone should fire up and start streaming. You can now download steam VR and fire it up. Enjoy.

Note, MOST people found trinus VR worked just fine for them. For some, the head movement is not tracking right or not working at all. If this is the case for you, then I suggest using Kinovr.

You can download kinovr here http://kinovr.kinoni.com/

So again, download the program to your computer, then go to your phone, and download the kinovr app. On your PC open up the kinovr app, and its pretty easy to figure it out. One thing you will need to do is click the VR setting tab, and then set PITCH to MOUSE X, and YAW to MOUSE Y. Again, I had to turn the sensitivity up all the way, but adjust to your needs.

On your phone, fire up the kinovr app, and it should connect automatically.

Enjoy steamvr. I will offer limited support on this guide, mainly because I had to REALLY fight with it for over a day now to FINALLY get it to work. Overall, VR has made leaps and bounds and I found it an amazing experience. Obviously, the quality using your PHONE is NEVER going to be as good as getting yourself an oculus rift. So now that I have had a good chance to TRY these games using my phone, it has inspired me to go out and actually buy the oculus rift itself so I can have the best quality experience.

Note to steam if you read this : its really dumb that you try and force players to drop over $600 just to even TRY virtual reality. Its stupid and not a lot of people are going to. If you even just let us give a couple of free to try titles a go using our phones, more people might be apt to go buy a rift (like me). You really should consider letting us try it the cheap way first, and if we like it, maybe we go out and buy the rift.

EDIT : One thing I forgot to mention. When you are done with the initial steamVR setup, close steamVR. When you want to play a game using VR, just run THE GAME ITSELF. Dont open SteamVR. When you open the game, SteamVR will automatically open - IGNORE THIS, and alt-tab back into the game and start playing. Most games require some setup steps, so just google whatever game you are trying to play. Example "Half Life 2 VR" and there are forums that tell you how to do it. Its pretty easy.

oh gosh nice writeup I think, but streaming to your phone??????? This would be a horrible experience, nothing like a Vive or Rift. Do yourself a favor, skip this massive tutorial for an awful experience. and find an in-store demo of an HTC Vive or Oculus Rift or ask on Vive or Oculus subreddits if someone in your area is willing to demo to you.
Would this work with Moonlight streaming mode in Trinus?
