Base station 2.0 - Large scale tracking
Hello everyone,

We are planing to release a free-roaming VR game and we would like to know If we can rely on the base station 2.0 to track our players and guns. Unfortunately, information about the tracking is very sparse.

- Is 10x10m tracking ready?
- How many base stations can we connect right now? What is the max area size?

We plan to start with a 10x10m (100m2) area then increase that to 20x20m (400m2).
We want to have up to 16 players

Thanks,
David

Crazy Test !!!

We're having this problem as well in our 10m x 10m playspace. Best we can figure out is that when you move too far away form one basestation 2.0 it attempts to connect to another 'closer' one and you get a white flash. Every time you get a flash, there seems to be a chance for the play space to get totally messed up.

We're currently using 8 base station 2.0's for our 10m x 10m space.

Little update here for anyone else having problems setting up an extremely large space. We talked with Alan Yates from Valve about this problem. His suggestion was to use fewer Base Stations. We reduced to 4 and the grey / white flashes of tracking loss went away. It seems to be something about 'connecting' to other base stations as you walk nearer to them. Overall, the 10m x 10m space works mostly fine with 4 base stations but we do get a fair bit of controller drifting as you walk around the space.

Here is our latest layout that mostly works:

Thanks for the update,
Did you try the valve trackers on this layout ?

Well, 10x10 is a lot, but we will try again in a dark room. A few months ago, test was not so great...with fly away..etc...

And for now, and may be this will change thanks to Valve.....who knows...
by the way, if someone has Valve roadmap :)...

"SteamVR Tracking 2.0 only supports 4 bases per session. More than 4 can be found, but a device can only track from up to 4. It will not automatically switch to other bases during a session."

An instance of SteamVR can only accept tracking data from no more than 4 stations, specifically the first four it sees in a session.

And four BS is probably not enough for a large room...

So, we finally tried and tested the hardware on a large scale space.
Situation was nearly perfect as we had acces to a 12mx8m theater scene, with absolutely no sunlight.

Tracking was surprisingly good, although we had some problems when we stacked multiple players in the corners.
The vive wireless was ok with that space, but went horribly wrong each time someone was standing between the player and the transmitter.

We had some kind of "bluetooth overload" when we added 12 vive trackers on set. Problems were reduced with 8 trackers on bluetooth and 4 tethered on the backpacks pcs.

Finally we found out there was a gigantic playspace for the room scale set-up in SteamVR that looked even bigger than 12mx8m. Maybe we might get some good news in the future :)
