Raptor: Call of the Shadows (1994 Classic Edition)

Raptor: Call of the Shadows (1994 Classic Edition)

game is overrated
sure, its good and fun, but not nearly as good or legendary as people make out to be, there are serveral serious flaws with this game.

the worst, without a doubt are the laser enemies. a single shot, A SINGLE SHOT takes town half of your life bar, and many of them fire more than one laser at a time.

so you get tons of cheap deaths from encountering enemies for the first time. even more cheap deaths untill you realize exactly when these enemies apear because they fire the second the come to the screen.

second major issue is that very few of the weapons are actually worth buying, make replayablity almost none existant. and having more than 2-3 selectble weapons equipped will make you WEAKER because you can't manually choose which weapon you want at a certin time, you just tap the alt key untill you can finally use that ground-only weapon.

and third, losing your weapons when you are on low health is really really bad design choice. grinding hours just to get a 100k$ weapon back? really? i had to reload a mission a couple of times because of that. instead of having 99 health you might as well start with 80 because after you get to 20 health you might as well just die and restart the mission.

PC has way better 2d shooters than this.

It's a classic that most of us, who bought this game played as a child. There are ways to pass by these issues you have: e.g. buy phase shields and wait till you have enough cash to buy superior weapons. For me classics will never be overshadowed by new games. Nothing tops classics.
One of the best !!
as i said, there are far better than raptor that came out during the same time

I'm with you. I didn't like it much in 1994, either.

I'll say this: it's not a legendary shooter or anything, but it is a damn good one. It seems the problem that you have is the fact that it's a rather difficult game. But yeah, there are better ones like Tyrian 2000 (I mean if we compare older shmups).
Also, it's funny to see someone complain about an attack that ALMOST kills you in a shmup.

most other schmups are built around the -1hit kill, by either having reletivly short stages, extra lives. or ways to quickly dodge these attacks.

in raptor, the stages are very long, 1 life, and no way to quickly dodge a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ laser that comes instantly from the top of the screen.

ill agree that raptor is a good a game. i just think it gets a lot more praise that it deserves

Oh yeah, I know and I agree, but for me it's not that big of an issue seeing as you get unlimited continues, you don't lose money or your power-ups.
Trying once again and staying away from the lasers become a lot easier once you know their strength and when they come.
Compare this to Gradius where, once you die, you feel useless for the rest of the game.
I don't really like that kind of trial and error, but it doesn't happen often enough in this game to properly piss me off. This is coming from someone who can't stand Dark Souls.

I guess it depends where you look, because I don't really hear a lot of praise for it.
But yeah, it's not the best freaking shmup out there for sure.

Played this game when I was a kid and I still love it.

OP, there's actually a few 'exploits' in this game.. you don't have to grind for hours just to get that sweet Twin Laser ;) Also, you can anticipate incoming enemies and shoot them down before they get to fire by paying attention to the shadows.

I finished this on Elite in about 5 hours. Granted that I had prior experience but it really isn't that hard..

I wish there was one, I am still searching. Skyforce and Skyforce Reloaded are great, but I wouldn't say they are better, just different.

As far as super fast, energetic shooter like Thunderforce, there's nothing like it on PC. But if you enjoy more slower paced shooters there's a few good ones.
I personally enjoy OverKill and Major Stryker. They haven't aged that well, but they're pretty fun nonetheless for seasoned retro gamers.

As far as 2d shooters available now goes, there are a crap ton of good ones on PC.
Locomalito's Hydorah is fantastic and is available for free, but I recommend buying Super Hydorah. It's pretty much the same game with a bunch of additions.

Nice tip, I try the free Hydorah. Overkill and Major Stryker, mhm, I never was a huge fan of 16 color games, but maybe I should try them.

True, one of the best games of this genre ever made. I played Tyrian 2000 and Raptor endless times oh and Interpose from Twilight Zone Software. Jets'nGuns is also nice.

More tips? :D

Considering it was 1994 and most of the schmups came out on consoles and arcade at the time, this was nice. Tyrian 2000 is better for me though I agree but still.. at least this is better then all those "bullet hell" shooters coming out nowadays.

wtf, ended this game on hard when I was a child... playing with a f joystick, wich is the most ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and uncomfortable to play XD. Later on I started to play with mouse, an it was a lot easier. Never had any issue with those laser guys btw, when you know how to deal with them...

I end this game like 20 or 30 times since I bought it on floppy disks... and yes, having 2-3 selectable weapons is annoying, so you end always with 2, I recomend you use the twin laser (works on ground enemies) and the laser turret for killing on safe spots (only for aerial enemies)

And to be honest this game is super easy, the moment you can get phase shields is a piece of cake, its rare to waste them all and start to be low on health to lose the weapons.

Except bullet hell games, this games rely on knowing the position of the enemies and where is the best place to be, at one point most of the time you can just obliterate nearly all enemies before showing on screen, and happens most of the time unless is one of those levels where they throw you everything.

Of course there are little tricks to get you easy all the weapons you need, I did it as a child although could be repetitive. When you beat a sector, you can repeat it with all your weapons, the game raises the difficulty but you can farm there till you have enough money... selling repeated droping weapons like dumb fire missiles. The rest is memorizing...

PD: Sorry for the necroing... but the post was just there, not exactly buried.
