Stupid question...can I just use it as a monitor?
I'm just looking for a VR headset to essentially be used as an alternative monitor. Not horribly interested in the motion detection or controllers or anything, just in the extra immersion for some games brought on by seeing everything from a direct first-person view instead of through a normal monitor.

I think you might be in the market for one of these.

Plus, great sound! ;-)

1) OP didn't mention cost.

2) You left out the part about the dust-sucking vortex of fire-breathing PC tower that's required to run the Oculus Riftopus. This thing can display any device with HDMI out.

it's still shockingly expensive for a 720p face monitor, that just floored me it seems so over priced. and i'm talking about that in a thread about a $1000 face monitor with head tracking

I'm sitting on a GTX 980. Really just need to know if either this OR the oculus rift will do what I'm looking for. Everything focuses so much on all the special features that it almost makes it sound like they're required.

Both the Vive and the Rift would make crappy "normal" monitors. Only a small portion of the displays can be used for an undistorted rectangular view. Pixel density will also be low compared to a monitor viewed at normal distance.

They're pretty much exclusively intended for games that were developed for them then?

if you're just looking for a head mounted display i'd suggest getting one of the foam goggle kits people use for FPV remote controlled toys and simply replacing the SD screen with a HD screen of same size from ebay. i've done that to my quanum v2 goggles from hobby king and it works as a regular display

For the best experience, yes. You willl also be able use Vorpx (or similar) that adapt existent games offering a 2nd class experience. Using it as a normal monitor should be considered 3rd class.

I am hoping to install the VGA mod on my atari lynx, but that has a DB 15 out and I dont think a conversion from DB15 to DVI-D to HDMI is going to yield a stellar gaming experience. Even if it is an Atari product providing the source gaming material.

That said, I think using this as a normal monitor is not ideal unless you expect everything to be a sci-fi future minority report style of interface. Which is more of an MS hololense application... I think this is more for my inner monkey to eep with joy in a dark room while binging on Krispey Kremes and red bulls.

Clearly you've never priced out a high end gaming monitor.

Correcting some false info in this thread. You can use it as a monitor. the Resolution will give you lower than 1080p Quality but will simulate a large screen. (Best Way i can Describe it)
Also note that your pc dosent need to be a monster to run it. Although it does need to be super beefy to play games at good settings. If you need proof look at gear Vr. All that said if you want a nice monitor your better off with something 1440p/4k. Personally Id rather have a Vr Device because if you havent tryed one it is pretty sweet.

i don't understand the fascination with 1080. is it the millenials 1024x768 or something?
