whats a good and high quality audio solution?
Question here to all the audiophile gamers out there....any advice for sound solutions? I guess a decent stereo headset will do the job but maybe the imersion with a 5.1 or 7.1 headset with a nice sound simulation will do a better job....or a worse if it cant handle the movement of the player compared with the movement of the soundsources....

I try to accept my surround system will not work fine because its static in the room and dies not move with your movement...so a headset is the problemsolver but i am not a big fan of these colorful ultimate gaming headset with....compared to a hifi headset will make you shame yourself for spending so much money for a headset like all the logitechs and razors or steelseries out there....

Logitech G930 is a good balance IMO.
Wireless, 7.1 surround, and not to hefty. They even recently redesigned it, so newer models are actually somewhat better than my 6+ yo one...
Its generally like $120 USD, but can VERY often be found for about $60-$90 instead.

I bought 3 of those g930. They are really good.

don't go with gaming headphones, unless you really must have voice chat. i have sennheiser 598's, i used to have their 298 gaming headphone series and the difference in audio quality is pronounced. there's some pretty cool new technology in headphones, that use magnetic speakers or something, i'm not too sure on the technical side but they don't ever blow out or distort. you can spend a lot of money on headphones, and the quality keeps going on up as you do, just have to find a middle ground somewhere you're happy with.

probably the most important headset feature for VR users is a thick cable, even if you have to use a converter to then plug it into your PC. i've ruined headphones yanking out the cord without being in VR, just being careless.

though you can find the g930 for 70 bucks now a days, if you have the money, I second the sennheiser. Before you choose, try the vive built in mic, if it lacks, try the g930.

You wont find one, not for VR, it's nigh impossible based on the way the headgear will interfere with the headphone band
Maybe some IEM will do, but they won't really have a great sense of space based on their limited stereo imaging

My fav headphoes so far are the HD600 for gaming, but they're not cheap and you need a suitable headphone amp to drive them

Surround sound headphones are of poor quality when compared to simialr priced stereo headphones, and tehy do not convey SS that well imo
I have had an assortment of SS headphones and found in the end that 2.0 works best, you just need a quality driver, also haing a comfortable headphone helps too

Here are some of mine, I have 2 that I recently acquired that are not in this pic

I don't really collect heaphones, they just all do a very different thing
With some VR units being around 400+ grams and then some headphones being ~ 200+, that's a bit of weight on your head

I would be looking at something like this, purely for a design point, not SQ. The link is for reference not SQ

This caught my eye, could help you based on 30 Hr playback time
Reviews seem good too and is reasonably cheap. This could keep you going till you find something more suitable that obviously costs a lot more

When i was playing elite dangerous with dk2 and creative z or a g930, the 5.1 audio was somehow emulated according to where I was looking. I did a test and decided with my g930 because it worked with my dk2 and audio was sent through the headphones correctly even at the direction I was looking at. If i fired my guns and i was looking streight, the sound came through both ears. If I fired my guns and looked to my right, the sound was on my left ear.

This was in oculus though. Ill be getting a vive shipped within this month and i can make a decision then.

probably right plissken, bluetooth is a better idea. i do think that surround with directional audio is probably as good as surround, but i've never really tested the difference. whatever you decide, when you get some decent sound, you gotta listen to this ♥♥♥♥.

Ok i dont like the logitechs and whilemplayin VR i dont need voicechat or a mic...just in case there is the buildmin mic so i can go full soundquality.....i work hard and have sometimes alot of stuff on my head so the vive plus a highquality headset no problem...the point wich lead to this was....we spend so much money on the vive and highend power pc for the best imersion but use cheap in ears witch bad sound or go for gaming headsets wich in my opinion have a lack of soundquality too....i gonna check out the sennheiser you guys said and thanks for the feedback ...the logitech users here should test hifiheadphones jn the same pricelevel like the logitechs...and you gonna sell instand the old ones and go for the hifi headphones.....add a table mic and you can enjoy best sound with good voice qualy for voicechats. These days i dont get why we gamers are so stupid and spend tons of money for special haming stuff and dont check if non gaming stuff is some level above the stuff they try to sell us....like the gaming chairs

For people who want really high quality audio. Look into AKG . They make absolutely fantastic headphones.

5.1ch headphones are useless for VR. Every game implements stereo 3D positional audio. I recommend a low-impedance open-back headphone like the Beyerdynamic DT880/990 (32 ohm version). Mine are comfortable for long use and the long cable is not nearly as annoying as I thought it would be. If your environment is somewhat noisy then a closed-back pair may be the way to go, but a wider soundstage is ideal for VR.

Everyone saying "get a headset only if you need a mic", don't. The Vive has a built-in mic, though the quality isn't the greatest.

This is not a factor with the Vive, you plug headphones into the headset.

AKG are useless for gaming and also have quality issues

You need to understand what type of sound signature you require. Until you do this, no headphone will be of any use to you

An IEM will be a much better proposal for you, based on the ergonomics of the device, wont be cheap but it wil serve you better imo

Go and listen to some headphones, understand what it is that you need when gaming with VR, do you want something that will dissappear or weigh you down even more?

My HD600s I can wear all day, not an issue, but they weigh 300 grams and have a presence on your head for somehting like VR
Comfort wise they are stellar, but i can't imagine wearing VR with these, so evenm the 598s will be an issue

Closed and open headphones offer different sound signatures too, the issue with open is you can still hear outside sounds BUT they offer a much better sound stage than similarly priced closed cans

I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 for tracking, so theyre closed, and extremely comfortable, issue is, they're bulky, I don't know I am wearign them BUT they're large
I have a Pair of Phillips X1's which are my best cans IO own regarding specific sound signature, more so for music than game playing and once again these are bulky, more so than the HD600 and DT770

You can get the Beyer extremely cheap from Juno recoprds in UK if you feel these suit your purpose, I woudl suggest listening to these as an open back alternative to all the ones I mentioned

http://www.juno.co.uk/products/beyerdynamic-dt770-pro-studio-headphones-250-ohm/386768-01/

These are the shape, not the model I am suggesting, these are 250 ohm also come in 80 (which I own) and 32 (which is perfect for portable use)
The point is, look at the shape, the headband is important and these can be tailored to suit your head size, ie the metal piece between the ear cup and band can be bent to fit the shape of your head

The DT 880s have been sold out, but as you can see the price is great, the 990s is their better almost perfomance model which sells for a similar price as the 770s
Open vs closed, Open is more transparent and sounds less boxed in, bass is more natural, closed is great for the requirements of isolation

But the purpose once again was to draw your attention to the headband, also the comfort factor
This is an AKG alternative whcih would be seriously silly to use, based on its wing design
Now since I have a similar Wing on my X1s, I understand the pitfalls of this, and it's not the best suited for a VR setup imo

http://www.juno.co.uk/products/akg-k701-premium-reference-class-studio-headphones/590709-01/

Once again, I woudl be seriously contemplating some good IEM rather than over ear, on ear, UNLESS you can find something which wil suit the VR headgear

HD600/598 require a good headphone amp, so you are looking at a sizable investment, I would say extreme overkill for VR based on ergonomics. If you think you can fit these cans with the VR, then great, but the cash is around $200 min for a decent HPA (Headphone amp) then $300-$400 for either, model of can
The pay off? stellar imaging, great sense of stereo imaging with a nice 3D stage
It's a large investment that could not possibly fit into the larger scheme of things, but my HD600s are over 12 years old now, and they have had a hell of a life, they're extremely durable, cables have been changed once and so has teh head band cushion/ear cups

Now back to my original statement, find the signature you want 1st, THEN look for something that will suit your purpose
Your ears will never lie, so go and audition some. My advice is to actually recod some game play and take that in to listen, don't use music, use actual game play audio, you might find what makes or breaks a headphone for your needs. Music is fine, but the reason you want game audio is to see whether the sound will be fatiguing dependent on the games you play

Just my $20 worh

:D

Sounds good, for music i have my nubert system in the living room. So its VR only of course i have a gaming headset with inbuilt mic but i thought i have the VR setup in the living room and the hifi system wont work while its static so i need a good sound solution and i thin in ears have a lack of volume in the sound...sure they do the job but compared to a fullscale system or good stereo headphones they gonna suck. I think i gonna try some headphones and make some note...after i got my vive i receck for the comfort factor some of my choices.

My usual signature is based on my nubert system and they are pretty well balanced with a neutral sound mix...so no overpowered plastic bass like logitech or unbalanced sound like bose or teufel..so i try to find some neutral headphones with good sound and go for the best comfort while wearing the vive

If there's one thing that pains me about this VR headset, is the knowledge that I can't use my JBL studio 5 hifi setup :(.
