Sit-down games outside of play area?
So in my planning to get this system I may have a potential snarl. I use an Obutto cockpit for most of my gaming (primarily simulators), and this thing isnt exactly easy to move out of my planned play area whenever I might want to do full-room vs sit-down.

Looking at the videos for setup, it seems that simply designating my play area to not include the cockpit would be obvious solution. But what would happen if I played a sit-down game, in the cockpit, while outside the designated play area? Basically, will the Vive flip out and/or constantly show the chaperone in such a situation?

Get both! Oculus Rift for sit down games (cockpit) or chair racing. Then HTC Vive for it's room scale experience. That's what I'm doing.

As long as the blocks can detect the Vive then you shouldn't have a problem playing games like elite dangerous, because all the Vive needs to do is be able to talk to them, so it can say when its location changes.

For standing/walking games, I think if you go outside the play area then you might fall off the map, so you would know when you are about to leave it.

If you love out side the range of a lighthouse they stop head tracking.

You can place the lighthouses on camera or speaker stands and move them between play areas.

You will likely have to rerun set up each move unless you can precision place them.

Ok, so as long as my sit-down area is still within the coverage of the lighthouses, then even if I'm outside my designated play area things will still work correctly?

That is really my only concern, and it's starting to sound like, at worse, I'd just need to re-run the play area setup when switching play styles.

I'm sure it will be fine, Valve are smart people. I am in the same situation, my desk is a fair distance from wehre I would use roomscale so I'd definitely be sitting outside the roomscale area when doing seated only stuff.

Watch this guy's setup video. The demarcated play area is for room-scale games. As long as your desk is covered by the lighthouses you will be fine for seated games.

Only as long as they are in range and can see the tracking nodes. Once out side of tracking range, the game will react. For instance, Job Simulator the sceen goes blank.

But yea, just moving them back and forth for you would likely be the best option.

Another option would tube to buy a third lighthouse when they become avaliable for sale or on ebay. Then mount it high on the front of your cockpit.

I think you can have different profiles for room-scale, standing and sitting mode. And you can reconfigure the Chaperone so it doesn't shop up all the time while sitting.

I just tested this. When you start a seated game, the chaperone bounds do not display unless you move a significant distance, i.e., get up out of your seat. My computer chair is right on the boundary I have and it never shows up unless I lean quite far out.

Good to hear, thanks.

Wonderful, this is all I needed to hear. Thanks!
