Recommendations for base station stands?
Anyone got some recommendations for lightstands, poles and stuff to attach the Vive base stations to? I'm going to be moving soon and then moving shortly after that and I don't want to have to drill so many holes in the walls. Plus I feel like it would be more stable on a lightstand.

Potentially something that can reach 8 or 9 ft at max.

Anyone?

Yes it is! Have you ever seen a shower curtain rod before? Did you notice how it was placed in the shower? Now imagine that instead of being between two walls it's wedged between the floor and the ceiling!

oh haha now i feel stupid..but i guess i've never seen a shower rod that was long enough to extend from the floor to the ceiling.
I wasn't talking about shower rods. I mean this thing, which costs 17 € (20 US$):

Obviously the light stand takes up more room than a curtain rod and curtain rods cannot be used anywhere that has higher than a 9' ceiling. Stability is not an issue with either. I plan on using my Vive in various locations so the lightstands is a better option for me.

In my apartment living room the base stations are mounted to the walls, in my office one is on a light stand and the other is on a 6" tripod on my window sill, at my house they are both on Lightstands. I am considering buying a curtain rod for my office because the light stand footprint is too large for the spot behind my desk.
Obviously you need a normal ceiling height for ceiling support poles. The stability of lightstands is worse because the basestations are far (2 m) from the fixed point (at the ground). With poles you obviously will position the basestation near the ceiling where the pole has a firm grip. This is important for rooms with "sensible" floors (which react to steps or traffic by trembling). And of course there is some risk that you or others hit a foot of a stand or even the stand itself, which will result in very uncomfortable swaying (to say the least). Sure, you can also hit a pole, but it's much less likely (being close to the wall) and has not much of an effect.

I found some of those online, but not for $20 each. cheapest I found was about $35. Can you post the site that you found them for cheaper? The link you provided has no prices.

Ahh okay. I see what you mean. That would certainly work.

But what if you were positioning these poles on something like a rug? I imagine it wouldn't be very stable, right?

what is your point?
Wth is a "sensible floor"? What you described sounds like a unstable floor.
What do you suggest someone do if they would like to place a base station somewhere that has a 18ft ceiling?

My point was that for some people the rod is a better option and for others the lightstands is a better option. Stability is not an issue. If you have floors that react to people walking then a curtain rod may be a better option and hard mounting the base stations is a much better option if your floors are that weak. If someone needs the ability to place a lightstands in various locations then a lightstands may be a better option. Right now I use a hard wall mount, lightstands and a 6 inch tripod in the different places I set up my Vive.

I just used those 3M removable sticky strip things to stick one of them onto my wall. No problem so far. The other is just sitting on top of a shelf.

I forgot the shelf idea. Surprised sticky pads would work well tbh.

http://www.amazon.com/Command-Mounting-Refill-Strips-6-Strip/dp/B000FCGS5Y Each of these holds 2.2kg. Surprisingly strong. Comes off cleaning too. I used a couple on the back of that mounting base thing. Yeah didn't want to drill holes on my end either.

I've actually started building my VR system for home mobility. I'm starting to get more roomscale capable. I got myself a 7" monitor, a 20lbs pc, micowireless keyboard and mouse.

I'm still waiting on my lighthouse set up to come in, but this is what I'm doing.

I'm planning on giving these a try, they are pool poles that extent from 6 to 11 feet. I'm not sure if they will hold by pressure or if I will need to make something to help. But for $12 it's worth a try.
Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/231880066188

And a simple go gopro cycle mount for mounting the lighthouses. At $6 each I can find uses in this application even if they poles don't work.

Wow for realz! Well Ill certainly consider that route too...cheaper than the lightstands.

The idea of the sticker strip things is good, but I'm a little concerned by the longevity of the adhesive being that the stations vibrate while they're in use.

Oh thats true. I guess it might be a good idea to continually replace it, but then you might as well just get a lightstand or pole.

The ceiling support things look like they'd do a great job, and they extend a good distance to support taller ceiling, but I think they're not quite as aesthetically pleasing as a uniform pole such as a curtain tension rod. Stability is of course a concern with both option. Curious to see how different peoples decisions pan out.

I'll give my thoughts as to the curtain rod option once they arrive with the camera clamps.

This is what I came up with, did some modifications and added soft plunger ends for stability and to not damage the floor or ceiling. Cost me about $25 each when it was done. The lanyard is for when I use it in the garage, 11ft to rafters and concrete floor.
