Screen Resolution Gear VR vs Vive
I've got the Android Gear VR system that came free with my new phone and it's pretty amusing, not something I would pay for but it's nice. My question is, on the Gear VR you can sure and heck see pixels especially when you're watching a movie or something. Is the Vive any better then this? I've heard it isn't as good as a new moniter, and I accept that, but if it is as bad as the Gear that'll be a real turn off for me.

TLRD; Anyone have a Gear VR and a Vive and can tell me if the graphics are much better on the Vive or not? And yea I know the Vive sure as heck better look much better, I'm just compairing it to something I know.

I've got both. The Gear VR has a few more pixels, but the optics are way better on the Vive - so the Vive looks better overall, by far.

The Gear VR, the pixels are less noticeable because the lenses are nowhere near as sharp, and near the edges of the Gear VR, there's a lot of chromatic aberration (colour fringes).

The Gear VR is lighter - you don't actually need the top strap. Annoyingly the USB connection on it to charge the phone while in it is on the same side as the controller on the side of the Gear VR.

The graphics on the Gear VR are of course not as good because they're powered by a phone, not a computer. The Vive also doesn't overheat every 30 minutes :)

The frame rate on the Gear VR is also noticeably worse. I don't think it would work anywhere near as well as it does without the Oculus reprojection but you can tell that even if the view is moving with your head at 60fps, the objects in it never really are...

What generation Gear VR do you have? I've got the third gen - it's a little different to the first/second gen. I see very obvious fringes on objects at the edges of the vision. It's fine in the centre though.

I might also be further from the designed IPD than you, too - the Gear VR has no adjustment for that.

So you're saying my phone has better resolution then the Vive does?
Resolution, yes, your phone is 515ppi, the Vive is 455ppi. I was wrong earlier. But that does not mean the image is better, just that it has a smaller SDE. The Vive can do alot more to improve the image and feel, like run run at 90fps and use software to sharpen and sync frames.
PPI on screen vs PPI on virtual Wall is two things, looking for optical experts to compare PPI on virtual Wall with professional test method.

No, this first generation is not good for watching movies or using desktop apps.
It's not good for desktop apps, thats true, but for movies it's really REALLY good and will be even better when resolution will be higher in the future.

Are you talking about the Vive? I love my Vive, but I can't imagine watching movies on it.

There are pretty big differences between Gear VR and the Vive/Oculus which makes things as clear as mud. Gear VR uses the phone screen which has a resolution of 2560x1440, which is better than the one in the Vive that is 2160x1200, however the Vive should be able to make better use of it's available resolution where Gear VR might need to waste some of the resolution because the phone was not designed for VR. The Vive also has a low persistence 90hz screen that is much clearer and more fluid than a Gear VR screen which isn't as low persistence and is only 60hz. The pixes in the Vive are also not laid out in a square grid like in Gear VR, which helps break up the screen door effect so it is a bit less noticeable. However despite all the fancy tech in the Vive, there's no getting around the fact that it's pixels are simply bigger than those in Gear VR so in the end it's very difficult to determine which is better and it's basically just down to personal preference.

TBH neither are that great, the next gen of HMDs are likely to have greatly improved displays so you are probably better off waiting for those. You can still get a lot of enjoyment out of the Vive though, and once you are immersed in a game you stop looking at the low resolution and just enjoy the experience.

- higher resolution would not only increase the price but make the main problem of VR even worse - it requires a ton more cpu and gpu power - so 4K VR would mean it needs hardware that wont exist for the near future or reduce the graphaics qulaity to a very low level
- for the reason i stated above it is also not likely to be better within the next 1-2 years so waiting would mean waiting for a long time
Nope, that is where you are wrong, higher res screen doesn NOT mean that the image has to be generated in 4k, it means that it CAN be. But most important of all it means that you will have higher pixel density(less pixelated image, smaller screen door effect) even when you are projecting only 1080p. So yeah... we need 4k screens as soon as it is possible.

although i would love higher pixel density a lot, I'd also love a bigger FOV like this one:

that's going to be extremely immersive!

VR isn't going away, too many people are realizing the incredible potential, even if the big audience isn't there yet.. they will keep developing better hardware until nobody can't resist anymore... :)
