Vive loses tracking, turns grey when looking at certain angles
If I turn to certain angles, the headset display turns grey. The headset icon blinks and one of the tracker's icon turns grey. I tested connecting the tracker's using wireless and wired mode. When the headset turns back to other angles display resumes normally. It is not a usb/hdmi bug.
Contacted service, told me to put trackers closer, cover windows, and remove rift from system. Will update if this works, but strange thing is this didn't happen before a week ago.

Try to remove direct sun lights, cover any mirror surfaces (TV, glass doors)

I recently moved mine to a very high position, perhaps 6 inches from the ceiling, and tilted at a 45 degree angle. grey flashes have almost completely gone away.

Start Steam VR:
Select Steam VR Drop down menu fromt the little vive pop up box.

>Room Overview

In here you can see exactly how your "lighthouses" are set up and if you have any coverage issues. However it sounds more like a height/angle issue.
There is an option to "show in headset" so you can walk around in your space and exactly identify the trouble area which may help in better lighthouse alignment.

Anyway hope that helps.

I had same issue. Failed base station laser. One way to test is unplug one base. Switch the other base channel to A. Turn on vive and check if you get tracking when pointed at it. If you do , turn that base off and try the other one. Remember to switch to channel a. If you dont get any tracking from one, then you probably have a bad station. You can use the steav vr app to make a system report and look for "appears to have failed". Mine says "Base DAB5FC49 axis 1 appears to have failed" over and over and over. Had to do chat support, and then send in for Repair/replacement. FYI if you have it more than 14 days sending it is is out of your pocket (this burns me, even more so as canada post is on strike and i had to use purolator). The up side is you can still play many games with one base, project cars, elite dangerous, audio shield, final approach and space pirate trainer work great. brookhaven works fine until something comes up behind you. Hope yours can be rectified without having to send it back.

I have gone through all that and it helped in the way that i've got my lighthouses in a better position with full coverage of the room, I even checked in VR, which i had coverage everywhere i was walking. But Im still getting jumping and moving hand controllers from time to time, even the display turns grey on the very rare occasion. Ive even conected the sinc lead aswell just to make sure.

I tried those tests also and my base stations seemed fine thank god. Sorry to hear your problems, hope you got it sorted now.

I seem to have more problems in the evening after night fall for some reason, but durring the day when i have had probs if i re-boot/re-start the VR HMD sometimes helps or run the setup AGAIN... also can help alot (ive ran that so many times before playing, which im sure you dont need to) but it helps!

I will experiment more in the evening and run setup etc more often maybe, but in the evening I normally only get the problem in the middle of a game and only on for a short time so cant be bothered to exit game and re-run setup, I put up with it.

I know this is an old thread but for anyone searching experiencing similar issues: If you have an Xbox One kinect running in the same room that can cause issues with your Vive. Turn it off.
