Cost and shipping to Canada (info inside)
For fellow Kanuckistanians looking to order, here's my experience (box just arrived a few hours ago):
  • Location, Ontario, Canada, suburbs of Toronto
  • Order placed: very early AM, Friday, June 10 (yes there was beer involved).
  • Order received Tusday June 14, 10:00 AM at front door.
  • Total Cost: $1309.67 CDN. That's bottom line, after taxes, shipping, etc, with product in-hand.
Taxes of course will vary depending on your provice. I haven't been able to open the box yet, but hope to get on that in the next few hours.

I'm definitely not interested in the Vive as it's listed here on Steam. How much of it is what we actually need? I mean, it's basically $1200 on the site ($1149+$10 shipping). Isn't the device supposed to be more like $800 and even that's only because of some required accessories?

Vive will only work if you have the whole kit - the sensors, the headset and the controllers. All are contained in the box, and the box is $1150 CDN plus applicable taxes and shipping.

If you're looking for a cheaper and less robust VR experience, the Oculus is available for a few hundred dollars less. Sitting in a chair with an XBox controller is not my idea of "VR", though, so be sure you know what you're buying.

EDIT: I've tied both, and the Oculus headset is lightier/sleeker, but with a narrower field of view. I also found light bleed and internal reflections to be a problem with the Oculus headset. Vive's headset is clunkier, but the wider FOV and better seal around the face make for superior immersion. YMMV.

Yeah, but I thought that the listed price for the Vive was still considerably cheaper than that. Currency conversion I guess. I know it needs some accessories, but breaking into 4 digits (Canadian) is a bit rich. I'll probably be going Oculus then. I don't really have the room to spare to use the Vive properly as it is.

Lol - yeah, that's kind of what the whole post was about. Also, people in Canada buying from US retailers often face hidden charges at the border or otherwise. I wanted to let fellow Canadians know what to expect if ordering this system. Yankees need not apply ;)

Computer equipment in Canada's been overpriced for awhile. Even factoring the exchange rate you're basically paying an extra hundred bucks.
