HTC Vive

HTC Vive

A couple of questions.
So I'm thinking about getting the Cosmos Elite with the HTC wireless adapter, but I have a few questions about the wireless part:

1. I see that the battery life is a bit on the short side (2.5 hours? Really?). Is there a battery that will give me a bit longer? On this front, I did come across the TPCast which has a 5 hour battery life. Apparently both can have their batteries swapped on the fly, which is a great thing. This leads me to another couple questions though.

1A. Is the TPCast compatible with the Cosmos Elite? What about the Valve Index?
1B. Of the above two VR systems, which is better? Pros/cons?
1C. Of the above two wireless adapters, which is better? Pros/cons?

2. How long do the batteries of the HTC wireless adapter and TPCast take to charge? I've seen online that the TPCast provides 5 hours of battery life with a 10 hour recharge. Is that true?

3. I read that the HTC wireless adapter had some issues with AMD Ryzen systems when it was first released. I have an AMD Ryzen 5 1600X @ 3.6 GHz. Has this issue been fixed/resolved?

4. More a general question for the Cosmos Elite and/or Valve Index (the wireless adapters too I suppose), but I have an NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 (6 GB) GPU. Any issues there? I currently have a Lenovo Explorer WMR headset that works great with my current rig, but it's a bit uncomfortable, the cable is super long to try to use with a wireless adapter (don't want to cut/splice it) and I'd love to get something with base stations because there's a couple games I want to try that require them. But yeah, my current rig runs my Explorer just fine.

5. Does anyone know if the Vive Cosmos Elite is compatible with the Kat Walk C VR treadmill? The company that makes it (Kat VR) says that it's compatible with the Index, but makes no mention of the Cosmos/Cosmos Elite other than it's "compatible with all major VR headsets".

Sorry for the rather lengthy posts and tons of questions, but while I'm not exactly new to VR in general, I am new to wireless VR and I've been told that wireless is the way to go for something like the Kat Walk C VR treadmill.

Any recommendations would be more than welcome, thank you very much for your time in reading this and thank you in advance for any responses.

I use the Wireless with my Vive Pro and I can not think about to go tethered again, never ever. But I do not use the original battery. Instead, I bought a 26800 QC3, and this is important, a Quick Charger 3 battery. So I exceed 6 hours of continuous play.
TPCast is old and it never was a perfect system, it had some issues with sound and USB.
I am runnig a AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6 Core Processor at 3.59 GHz. And I have PCI slot to plug the Wireless card. Your NVIDIA is not going to give the Cosmos all the resolution it can get.
On the other hand, HTC has said that it is going to announce something big this year. But nobody knows what it is.

Thank you so much for answering. I've actually been thinking about upgrading to a GTX 1080 Ti soon, so that should help in the resolution department. I need a new GPU anyways since my 1060 is having fan noise issues (sounds like a mechanical scraping sound).

I have a couple extra PCI slots, so I'm not worried there. Sorry, I forgot to mention that.

Thanks for the heads up on the battery, that's awesome! I assume it's interchangeable on the fly so you can have one charging while the other is in use, letting you swap them out when one dies if you're in the middle of a marathon gaming session? Also is that 6 hours of continuous use per battery? Or total across all batteries? How many batteries do you have? Can you suggest a good charger?

Also, what wireless adapter do you use? The official HTC one I assume since you said the TPCast is old and was never a perfect system?

Yes, I use the HTC wireless. And I have 3 different batteries. The original HTC battery (too expensive), one from AOAFUN (QC3 20000mAh), and one from Charmast (QC3 26800mAh). I 3D printed a belt holder for them, and I hold them in my belt on my back.
Batteries are interchangeable on the fly, but there is no sound or alert when it gets depleted. And some games like Rec Room cannot recover the microphone when this happens.
My 26800mAh battery lasts at least for 6 hours, maybe much more. It depends on the game, microphone, sound...
Another thing I use is a cable extender for the antenna. The original cable is short. It should be a 75 ohms regular WIFI cable (male/female), it is a thicker cable. This is because I do not want to put it over my monitor and I use a tripod to hold it over my table. Maybe your PC is some far away from your room or you want to put it in a special place.

Thank you so much for all of your answers and insight!

My PC is up on my desk (L-shaped desk, wall on my left, second part of the L is on my right, forming a sort of cubicle), I'll be using the wireless headset on the other side of my PC, so I can likely just use some kind of tripod like you do, only set it on top of my PC.

As for the mic cutting out, I'm not really all that concerned because I probably won't play all that many VR online games, but it's good to know nonetheless. Thank you for this!

Thank you so much for the info on the batteries. I'll absolutely be getting a couple of the QC3 26800mAh ones for that sweet, sweet 6 hour battery life. Sucks that there's no warning, but I can always set a timer for 5 hours. I'll definitely have to check out some way to rig up having several batteries on me at once so I can quickly move the cable from one to the next.

I appreciate all the time and info you gave, it's a ton of help. I'm about 99% sure I'm going to go with the Cosmos, HTC wireless adapter, and Charmast batteries, with the original HTC battery that comes with the kit as a last ditch backup for marathon gaming.

The mic thing could be solved by using Voicemeeter and clicking the menu when the audio glitches and "Restart Audio Engine" it helps when my mic doesn't work for other games. Works for inputs and outputs to a virtual cable. I can switch between my speakers (connected by fibre) and my bt headphones.

Thanks, I would try it.
