HELP: New Vive Cosmos controllers (donuts on top) not connecting

I just got the Vive Cosmos Elite with the new Cosmos controllers. The Cosmos controllers use 2 AA batteries each and I've put brand new batteries in both controllers. The headset is done installing and that went well.
When I switch on the controllers during the pairing section they blink white for about 10 seconds and then switch off again. I've looked all over for what this means and how to connect them via Steam VR using different button combinations but none of it seems to be working.

Any help/hints are much appreciated!
