If you own a vive or vive pro you must do this.
I just got in replacement lenses for the vive from a samsung gear and the adapters and it is the biggest improvement. Really incredible, totally clear, no god rays and bigger sweet spot. Still all the same SDE but the sharpness is way better. I bought the Pro, ever so briefly, and that step from vive to vive pro wasn't as big to me as these new lenses are. And they will do the same for the pro because that has the same crap fresnel lenses. Highly recommended.

Nice! Thanks for the link. Seriously considering this.

I tried this with my vive, and I switched back to the stock lenses. It was certainly clearer, there's no doubt about it, but it's not worth the frustration with the distorted lens effects that put some pretty bad strain on your eyes. It's not something you want your eyes to adapt to. And yes, I followed all of the steps, updated the profile to each version, etc. None felt just right. There are some programs that let you try to adjust the params to try and make it look better, but it's certainly no automated system.

And if the headset is not situated just right on your face, the curvature of the lenses greatly distorts the screens. It made me realize the benefit of the included lenses... that they can shift and it's not impactful. Your headset shifts with the gear VR lenses, and the warp is noticeable.

Additionally, if you put the stock lenses back in, it might not be perfect, and can throw off the factory adjustments that were made specifically for your headset. That file you backed up before making the changes... that file is a long list of variables that were made specifically for your headset. take those lenses off, and those variables no longer apply to the position of the lenses. being off just a little can impact it. So there's no completely going back once you've removed the stock lenses.

Since I went back to the stock lenses and restored the original config, it never felt quite right. Not like it did before I removed them.

I'm certainly not saying that the OP is feeding lies. And maybe different people have different experiences with it, but I just wanted to share my own experience.

I put them in correctly. I adjusted the IPD. I'm not saying the distortion is terrible. I'm saying it's there and after using it for about two weeks, my eyes started to feel an unnatural strain... in and out of the headset. as if I just been wearing someone elses glasses. And the fact that it gets so distorted if it's shifted (that's the nature of the lens), make it even worse.

And saying that someone that relays their own negative experience that's contrary to your own experience makes them a shill or work for the vendor just goes to show that you yourself are not reputable. If you're going to try and tell people to try something out, you have to take some criticism from those who do not agree.

And unless you're personally selling the adapters, there's no reason for you to get defensive... what do you care if someone decides to switch the lenses or not?

After I made the switch, I was extremely impressed. It's super clear and the sweet spot is expanted. No more god rays. The distortion was barely noticable. Something easy to overlook. I'm not saying that there are no positives. But after a while of using it, I was feeling eye strain. I started reading up on reddit n' whatnot to see if people had some utilities or other options to refine the setup. That's when I started reading that a lot of people experienced some degree of the same thing. I saw people suggesting the refinement tool to help get it more accurate... closer to what might be considered a "factory calibration" to those lenses. most people there were looking for a solution for this problem. Just go to the HTC Vive reddit and search for "gear". You'll see several discussions. Lots of people say the same thing as you, but if you keep reading deeper and deeper into the thread, there are constant discussions about how they "tried this and tried that and it's a bit better". some say it's too much for them. some say they managed to find a solution that works for them. But it's all on the same topic of lens distortion and how to deal with it. So it's not just me.

I DO NOT AGREE, you'll get dust on the screens and you'll need to tweak with geometry parameters, and it is not sure the floor is going to be on its right place anymore. I had a really bad experience with the regular Vive and do not want to repeat that with the pro.

I was careful when I replaced the lens, and dust on the screens was never an issue for me. The floor issue I had was remediated by adjusting the IPD, which I had to bring as low as it would go. That also helped greatly with the distortion. If the IPD adjustment range is not enough for you, It'll never look right and you'll feel like you're in the floor among other distortion issues.

Yeah..I wouldnt do this to my Vive.

Some people like it and claim it makes everything better but I've read just as many reports to say the opposite.

Not advising against doing this but it is something you do at your own risk.

My point is: do not say that I MUST DO what is a big risk to my headset. I tried it out with my old headset and it was a wrong decision, so be aware of the risk.

Thanks, usaniumx. The can of air was a major fail because it freezes the atmospheric water over the screen. Now, I am going to use a sensor cleaning kit. But I am not worried because it was a little push to buy the Pro : ) What worked mostly fine was an air blower with microfilter. What I did not imagine was that just a couple of dust particles could ruin the immersion in VR. If you see any DIY, every people say "you will hear a pop" it is because is completely sealed in a special atmosphere. I believe me if I tell you that I am perfectly capable of making the modification. Do not insult anyone you do not know, it makes you look racist or xenophobic.

I did the lens switch too then switched back. It does look good when aligned perfectly, but the issue for me was I had to be way more careful about keeping the headset in perfect position.

Obviously for some people the mod works extremely well, so I think it may come down to how well it works with an individual's face/head shape as much as anything. I don't regret trying it out but it took me a couple tries to get dust specks out.

For me the regular lenses are just way more forgiving for active gaming, the GearVR lenses seemed to have a much tinier sweet spot and were very fussy about positioning.

it really hurts your eyes after awhile, my roommate and i wouldnt recommend it

I did this mod. It's OK. Field of view is reduced. Eyestrain is increased. But worth it, IMO as everything is much sharper. YMMV.

If folks want Vive Pro levels of resolution but don't want the fresnel lens issues then consider the Samsung Odyssey+. Same res, same panels, different optics. But, it's not Vive and app compat might be an issue.

Another thing, the folks dragging flibber need to chill out. Holy cow.

I'm pissed at myself for not picking up the odyssey+ when it was $300.... I've read great things about it.

Just installed the lens mod, oh man clarity is great but you lose so much FOV and it distorts the image on the outer edge i went back to original way better.
