SOLVED - Base station has developed an internal problem (fault 02)
I was so excited to get my new Vive today. Even though the Steam VR Performance test showed my system in the green, I was disappointed by the bad frame rate and stuttering. Then I noticed that one of the base sensors constantly flashed a red light and within minutes I started getting the error in the title of the post.

Any suggestions? I'm sick that I just dropped $500 on this and it doesn't work.

FOLLOW UP: I contacted HTC support via the chat on their website and they were VERY responsive and helpful. Unfortunately, the base station will have to be replaced but they made the process rather painless. I am quite pleased with their customer service.

Reddit user Cryptomon posted this fix:

The fix has worked successfully for several users, so we shipped the required files in the latest beta.

You can find the files under your SteamVR install directory.

Look Here:

(C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\tools\lighthouse\firmware\lighthouse_tx\archive\htc_2.0)

Once there the firmware files live in: tools\lighthouse\firmware\lighthouse_tx\archive\htc_2.0 You will need two files: * lighthouse_tx_htc_2_0-calibration-rescue-244.bin * lighthouse_tx_htc_2_0-244-2016-03-12.bin

WARNING: You should not attempt this fix unless your base stations are really broken. While it should be harmless, there is a non-zero chance it could make things worse.

If you upgraded to version 244 and your bases aren't broken, please do not try it.

The procedure is much like upgrading manually, but you do it twice, once with the fix-up firmware which will try to fix the base station, then once it has completed the fix, again with the current latest firmware.

With the base station unpowered, connect via a micro-B USB cable to your PC.

Hold the mode button down and plug in the power lead.

You can release the button once it enumerates as a USB mass storage device.

The drive will be called “CRP_DISABLED” and contain one file “firmware.bin”, delete that file.

Copy over onto the drive the “lighthouse_tx_htc_2_0-calibration-rescue-244.bin” file.

Once the copy is complete, pull out the power lead.

Wait a few seconds then plug in the power again. Be sure not to press the mode button while powering it up this time.

In a couple of seconds it should rapidly flash green or red. Green means it succeeded. Move to step 10.

If it is flashing red that means it couldn’t automatically fix it and I’ll need to book the base station in for repairs.

Unplug the power again.

Repeat steps 1 thru 7 but using the “lighthouse_tx_htc_2_0-244-2016-03-12.bin” firmware file instead of the rescue one.

The base should now be working again, confirm by setting its mode to "A" and tracking with it alone (the other base turned off). Once it is confirmed working you can add back the other base.

Did you check to see if the firmware is all updated? In the settings menu there is a tab you can click on to check the hardware and it lists the 2 basestations, controllers, and headset. It will say latest update or something to that effect if everything is updated fully.

That is good to hear. I hear so many negative things on here about their service. I hope everything works out well for you and you get it back fast. So they are sending you a new one. I guess they will send that out once they receive your defective one?

That is not a permanent fix (according to htc anyways). i had the same issue and after contacting support was told that it was "broken rotors" caused by shipping. After being told it was "unfixable" i found that lighthouse fix post online. When i contacted them again about that fix they said the lighthouse will still fail eventually because of the rotors and i will HAVE to buy 2 new lighthouses for 130$ each... after dropping 600$ (no thanks). They WILL NOT replace it even under warranty because 'It's caused by shipping and not their fault'.... Literally the worst customer support i've ever come across and yeah wish i would have checked their forums beforehand because after scouring them all you see is tons of posts from unsatisfied customers with the same issues. Hopefully they really do help you man because from what i can tell people are having to wait 6 months to a year to get their "replacement" and some have even had the same broken part shipped back to them.... not like they care anyways their aiming for the business market not regular consumers. With 80% of the games on steam being tech demos anyways i really feel like i wasted my money. Yeah everyone won't agree but that's my experience so far. Disappointing.
