You can otherwise use whatever you want. Personally I use closed back headphone made by Ultrasone. I'd recommend closed back headphones for better sound isolation. Other than that it's all up to personal preference and budget.
I have been recommended Kingston HyperX Cloud II which includes 7.1 surround sound through USB adapter. Which would leave a cord for my feet to trip over while using TPCast. But if headset is connected directly to the Vive itself, surround sound doesn't work and output is stereo only.
So what choices do I have for wireless surround sound with Vive?
The Vive has a headphone jack built in, I just use that.
For surround sound in VR, the games themselves uses positional algorithms to generate a 3D directional effect. You don't need special headphones and certainly not "7.1" headphones. The surround sound effect is purely achieved through software.
