HTC Vive

HTC Vive

[solved] Project CARS doesn't run out of the box!
I've been trying to get this crap to run for days, but have so far only been able to view the SteamVR menu and a grey empty room in my headset.

I've tried doing the following:
- Run SteamVR.
- Right click on Project CARS.
- Select HTC Vive as the VR device and launch.

At this point I can see all of the default splash and logo screens on my monitor, while I'm stuck at the same flat pcars image and a loading bar rendered in a 3d space that never seems to stop on my headset?

I can see and browse through everything on my main monitor, options, select cars, tracks, etc, and start the race, but my vr-headset is still stuck at that very same 3d space with a loading bar and when the race starts all I can see is that same gray 3d rendered empty space?

I've reinstalled all drivers, peripherals and Steam!

What the heck am I doing wrong here?

This is driving me crazy!

- Open Steam and click on library

- Select launch in SteamVR option.

When SteamVR is open before you launch project cars (and other desktop titles that had VR patched in at a later time) it causes some odd issues. Unless a game is built spesifically for VR / the Vive, odds are it wont always work "out of the box" and will require either a minor change within the games setting to support VR such as the tick of the "enable VR support" box with games like War Thunder or doing the above.

hopefully that will solve your issue.

Your problem is your seat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you reset the seat?

This is my layout!

4k screen infront of me

mouse and keyboard on my right on a table so i can access it

1 VIVE controller on. Once the game launches, let the credits run for a bit, hold system button on the controller till something pops up (reset seat should appear and close if its not up yet. reopen that menu and the menu option to reset seating should appear)

Reset reseating position. close menu and project cars is correctly oriented. This is a simple setup if you understood the VR equipment. you cant see the game because you need to reset the seating position.

INGAME in controls, set the f1 on the keyboard to reset headset when you bind controls!

Once you get this streight, ill share my project cars settings for maximum clarity and fun!

I was able to record my problem.

Again..I stress this is the incorrect way to launch Project cars in VR.

Do not launch Steam VR. Simply open steam, go to libary, right click Project cars and select the correct option (as screenshotted here). It wont work correctly if not launched correctly. Only use the SteamVR enviroment to launch roomscale games.

Hmmm. Ok...well thats the correct way. Just tested it on my PC and it's working fine. What "should" happen is that SteamVR launches (and you get the SteamVR box open on your desktop) then Project cars launches in a windowed mode and on your HMD.

Now I seriously doubt the issue is SteamVR (I assume it works with all other titles) so the issue appears to lie soley with Project Cars but I'll cover all bases I can think of.

Ok..so you're launching correctly, you've reinstalled all drivers, peripherals and Steam! So lets look at what you've not or may not have done.

1) Remove any 3rd party mods or patches from project cars. You've not mentioned having any but if you do, remove them as they can cause conflicts.

2) Verify the installation Project cars. Right click it in Steam libarary, then properties then "verify local files". It's highly probable that your build of Project Cars has not updated correctly for VR for some reason. This "should" fix the problem is so.

3) Verify the installation of SteamVR. Right click it in Steam libarary, then properties then "verify local files". Again..I doubt SteamVR is responsible but worth checking anyway.

4) If it still fails to work after the above then the last thing would be to completely un-install Project Cars, reboot your PC then re install it, prefrably to new location/another drive if you have that avalible.

If those dont work...sorry I'm all out of ideas.
I've opened a ticket on the steam support.

when i start my game, i start vr. then i load the game from within vr. I then reset seating so the screen is not invisible because i cannot see it first until i reset seating.

anyway, hope they can help.
Turns out my Windows user account had foreign non ascii characters in it and therefore wouldn't run properly.

How to solve the problem:
- Create a new user account containing only a-z characters.
- Give the account admin privileges.
- Relaunch your game through Steam VR.
- Done.
