the same day i bought the vive, i went to the store again to buy a 1080 otherwise it wouldnt be able to run.
THe GPU is the most important thing in being able to run VR. I've been running it with a GTX 970 and I wouldn't suggest going below that. You'll lose frames and get stuttering and it will make you ill in no time. No reason to spend $600 on a headset you cannot use. Upgrade your GPU first to at least a 970 and then get the headset. You're not saying what your GPU is, but I'm just going to guess just by you saying it's ****, no way you're running VR with it.
A 1080 or 1080ti is probably what someone should buy if they are getting a new GPU for VR. It's really stressing my 970. I have 2, but SLI will not work with any VR games I know of and will even cause problems.
I'm pretty much just below you in terms of benchmarks.......
I actually don't even want to say my GPU because its so F-ing bad lol.. (gamer shame)......
...so basically you are saying from experience its pretty much unusuable with a GTX970?
If thats the case....I'm going to have to wait and spend on some rig investments (pretty much whole rework) before I consider buying it.....breaks my heart....
No, it's plenty usable with a 970, but it's about the minimum. In fact, I think that's what Vive says is the minimum. That or a 1060. The 970 works, I can get 1.5 to 2x AA in most games and you're going to want that or higher for graphics quality. It makes a big difference. But it's taking everything the card has to get that. My next card will be a 1080ti. As someone mentioned above and then I commented on that, if you're buying a new card for VR, get a 1080 or 1080ti. That way you can max AA and not worry about framerate drops even on the most graphically intensive games. What's bad for me is that I have 2 970s, but SLI is as far as I know, unavailable in any VR games. Not that it can't be done, just that developers are not doing it.
Thanks for replying to me on this topic.....but I'm just unclear then....should I chance it on the VR hardware then?
I understand I'll probably have everything on low...or should I do the alternative and use all my willpower to wait until I get a new GFX card / or potentially new PC entirely.....
....my plan initially was to wait but the price drop has me intrigued....I just want it to be useable is all....last thing I need is a paperweight.
I can't honestly answer that because I don't know what your GPU is. If it's a GTX 970 or 1060, then yes, you'll be ok. If it's below that, you'll have all sorts of issues. Hope that helps.
