This game is difficult.
I just managed to win my first game, but...

I played on the easiest possible settings. The only thing that seems to be so difficult is the spawning of the monsters from breaches is unreasonable. If there is a corridor I have to go down because there is no other way, monsters just keep swarming through them with very little time before the next spawn.

It's hard to keep up with those small aliens that are pretty quick to latch onto you and then it's over in a second. I would like to play with the other features on, such as the power failures, but I just find myself quickly overwhelmed when the power goes out. The turrets really are the only thing keeping me alive.

Having said this, I really like the game.

I think the issue is that some of the settings in the game implicitly raise the difficulty without the player really knowing about it.

You may have noticed that there are different types of maps: Corridors, Dungeons, Mazes, and Minimazes. Corridors are tight and have many dead ends, dungeons consist of wide rooms, mazes are the largest type of map, and minimazes are the same, except 25% smaller. The thing is that in a mission, you may only encounter as many breaches as there are dead ends on the map, and a dead end is "a tile that is only connected to one other tile and that isn't the airlock". It happens a lot in mazes and corridors, not so much in dungeons. as a consequence, you may find some dungeon maps to be much easier, even with hard or hard+ difficulty. I started with that type of map before I climbed to the harder ones, and I would suggest you do as much.

Random breaches is also a stat that makes the game much harder unless you really know the stats behind the game. While you will still see as many breaches as there are dead ends on the map, those breaches will be able to spawn anywhere; in a dungeon map, it's not uncommon to find two, three, maybe four breaches around the reactor, usually making it extremely hard to turn the coolants off. I would advise you to stay away from that setting for the time being.

If you want, you could also disable the creeps that hug your face and prevent you from seeing around. They largely add to the amount of enemies you need to take down, and you may feel outnumbered pretty quickly with them.

Finally, if you'd like to learn gradually, there's always the possibility of playing co-op. We have a discord for this, and you'll be more than welcome to join us! :) https://discord.gg/ek265P

And finally finally, if you need a few more tips, I put up a guide for this game a while ago; I hope one or two of these may help you in your adventure. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=730700090

I read your guide, thank you!

In the time that I have played, I didn't even notice half the things you talked about. Different ammo types, the numbers on the doors revealing the location of the reactor...wow. You did a great job finding all of this.

I will definitely try out the different map types and see how it goes.

The face huggers are really my problem. It seems like if they get close enough, they do a kind of sudden jump, and from there you can do nothing about it. I'll see about disabling them, since my aim is not the best.

I think I'll stick to singleplayer for the mean time, though.

Many thanks!

You can shoot the face huggers off, no aiming necessary. When one latches onto your face, just hit the fire button....face hugger gone!

Many thanks =) As pebble said, facehuggers will die in one shot, regardless of ammo type, and you're guaranteed to hit them if they're on your face. You may be under the impression that they don't die simply because another face hugger instantly takes its place. In that case, feel free to disable them, yeah.

I would just like to encourage you to try the multiplayer sooner, rather than later, epecially if you can get an audio chat going. Hearing your team-mates adds much more to the game's atmosphere than you'd think it would.

I'll follow what Alekz suggested: while the game is really fun to play in single player, it's the multiplayer side of it that personally made me stick to it.

I think one of the most important thing that you have to learn to when to just back off and try another route rather than try to force your way through.

Other folks have said good stuff, but here's the elephant in the room: the game is MEANT to be hard. Once you get the hang of it you'll tear through easy-mode matches, but standard difficulty is tough even for experienced people due to several aspects of the game that exist JUST to make things a nightmare, like astro-creeps and (UGH) power outages.

If you want the down and dirty on the game from soup to nuts, check my guide - at this time I *think* it is the most detailed one available.
