Archer questions

How do archers work? I put some in a city expecting them to shoot, but they just engaged in melee?

Try changing their attack orders. Defend or Support is what you want

You don't see them shooting, but if archers are garrisoned in a city they increase the firing rate of the towers. They can also change the type of ammunition the towers use, so if your garrison is crossbowmen or gunners, you'll see the towers shoot crossbow bolts or bullets.

The battle plan will have no effect on units in a garrison.

I had them on harass. Will they ever shoot from inside city? Or should i focus archers behind a field army? Do i have to research and build towers?

Archers never shoot from inside a city, they are assumed to be dispersed to man the towers. Any city wall has towers, but you can research and build better ones.

atm, im not seeing much benefit to using archers (other than for wall purposes) in the field, i find it better to have a front line of 6 infantry and 2 inf/cav behind set to flank

If the city stationed in the 8 archers, the attack frequency of the tower will increase how much?

It depends on the number of towers, and number of men in the garrison, but a maxed out garrison will probably shoot three times as much as city with no missile units in the garrison.

Do Qin mixed foot and crossbow/spear act as crossbows when garrisoned?

The crossbowmen in the unit are counted when determining the rate of fire of the towers, the spearmen are not.
