Fatal Error on starting Trine 2 on new PC build
I've just rebuilt my PC with a new Z87 motherboard and i7-4770K using a clean install of Windows 8 Pro 64-bit. I have a GTX 780 graphics card and I'm using the 320.18 drivers.

When I launch Trine 2, which is stored with the rest of my Steam library on my non-boot E: drive, I'm getting this error:

Fatal error

Failed to create index buffer, error code: -2005530516
This is an irrecoverable error and will cause the application to exit.

I'm then dumped unceremoniously back on the desktop.

I've tried revalidating the cache to no avail. The only thing I haven't done is uninstalled and redownloaded the game but surely this shouldn't be necessary if the validation found no errors?

Can anyone help me please?

I forgot to add that I'm playing it on maxed out settings at 1920x1200 with Extreme AA, which worked fine before on my previous i7-920 build. I only played the game last week after the patch which fixed the psychedelic colours so I'm disappointed that I cannot continue to play on my new system.

The first Trine works perfectly by the way.

You could try if the game manages to start with lower settings. And does it say anything about having written a minidump when it gives you the error? That's one thing we could check :)

It doesn't work on the lowest settings unfortunately either and I even tried deleting the settings under UserData but that doesn't work either. The game starts loading, a black screen appears then 5 seconds later it crashes with the error above.

What is the 'index buffer' referring to? If I knew what that was then I might be able to identify what is causing the game to repeatedly crash. The game was working perfectly on my previous build (i7-920, 12 GB, GTX 780), especially after the game was updated to fix the psychedelic colour scheme bug related to my GTX 780 graphics card. It seems odd that it doesn't work on a new build with a fresh windows install.

There is no minidump because my new PC has never crashed/blue screened. Unless Trine 2 produces a log somewhere then I'm at a loss as how to fix the issue short of redownloading the game (I'd already validated it several times and no errors are reported).

I read about son problems qith the latest Nvidia drivers, but don't know much about that.

I fixed this issue by deleting the local content and redownloading the entire game again. It now works fine. It is odd that the Steam game validation did not fix it. It reported no issues and only redownloaded the main executable.

Ive recently ran in to some problems with my nvidia card . Someone suggested to install the legacy drivers from the nvidia website. Now trine works well along with many other games had start up errors. Apparently legacy drivers help cover older and different dx issues, not for sure...worked for me..The legacy drivers dont replace the current one but resides on hand if needed. Hope it helps. :)
