Trine 2
"Failed to join game (0)" - Still going strong
Hi,

Thursday night (30/10) I bought the Trine 3-pack on steam, one for me and two for my friends.
Because, Trine is a co-op game. Its fun to play with your friends.

All of us get "Failed to join game (0)" if we try to play together or join each others servers in any form.

If I look for servers manually, I find 1 or at best 2. These I can join without no problem.

If my friend looks for servers manually, he finds about 6-10.
These are not the same as I find, but he can join some of them.
We live in the same building, we have the same ISP.

So, I create a server, as we are troubleshooting on skype a random guy joins this server of mine. I ask him - "How did you join me here? Do you know about these error-messages? Do you know any tips?"

His response left me just stunned. "I dunno I just downloaded this game via torrent and this was the first server I tried". Also, today, the only server I do find, and I can join, is named "SKIDROW". Do you know what that means? It means that people who illegally download this game - not involving steam - have no problem whatsoever to play, together with, or without steam users. But people who actually pay for the game, cannot. (How did non-profit software-crackers become better bugfixers than a studio like yours? :( )

We tried every possible setting in the options.ini file reading from other threads.
We tried opening ports manually, even though we never had problems before with ports/steam in the years we have played, or now, in any other game.

Reading on the issue, this is an old bug. It might have been caused by a steam update but it is still your responsibility to see that the game works, if you intend to continue selling it.

If anyone else is experiencing this problem please add your comment below.

I hope we are able to find a solution for this error message so my and my friends can go enjoy the original and interesting game that is Trine 2.

Regards,
Johan

TL:DR - I Buy 3 copies of Thrine 2 for me and my friends to play and after 2 hours troubleshooting on skype nothing works and we are all very dissapointed and play left4dead2 & chivalryMW coop instead.

hmm, yea this happened with a steam update but it should be fiexed now and you may try a few things because it looks either like a router problem or a virtual installed network.

if you have VPN like hamachi try turning it off or uninstalling it alltogheter. Also check the order of network protocols bindings, your network card should be on top instead of some VPN
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-network-protocol-bindings-order#1TC=windows-7

if thats not the case, try reseting your router, a badly forwarded port may be causing the issue.
are you and your friends all on the same router?

anyway, thats all I can think of, if you want to do some testing you can add me since my multiplayer is working well

Sorry about this. We have been actively updating the game, so this kind of things happen along with the improvements. :(

If the instructions end gave above didn't help, we also have a thread for multiplayer troubleshoot, which you can find from here.[frozenbyte.com] Please note that there are also other programs that create LAN like network than Hamachi, please turn all of them off.

Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions about this. Cheers!
Thank you for your response, End and MarjutFB.

I live in an student apartment in Sweden, Lund, no physical router, only a ethernet port in the wall, running 1000/1000mbit. I could never put myself through placing a router in between the computer and the ISP, if you live single like me thats only gives slower speeds and general trouble :) Sadly, I'll be moving next week to a normal aparment, with a normal ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ISP, so maybe it will work differently then..

Neither of us use Tunngle or Hamachi. However, both of us do have a program that could be used to establish vpn connections (garena). I will investigate this!
Reversely, have people had any succsess running Trine 2 coop using only hamachi/tunngle? If that works better than steam that would be a sufficient solution for me. Im traditionally a big fan of hamachi.

..and End, I just might add you like you suggested. I'll see if the tips provided here works first though

Cheers,

If you're moving soon it's probably best to not tinker with this, but I'll write this if you want to try anyway or if this is helpful to you or someone else later. :)

Basically it's recommended to use a router for easy access to the settings and possible security. The decrease in speed should be minimizable through correct settings.

It also might be possible to open ports and edit other settings by accessing the provider's settings directly without a router. For this I recommend asking about it from the service's provider.

And about using LAN programs: unfortunately, we can't recommend using third party programs, but you could try the LAN program as I have heard that Tunggle has worked for many players. When trying this, you could also try to set the option
setOption(networkModule, "UseLANOnly", false)
to true from the game's options.txt file (located at %Appdata%/Trine2) and try it then.

Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions about this!

And if you ran into problems with this in your new apartment, take a look at the FAQ guide[frozenbyte.com] I linked earlier.

Cheers!
