Unfortunately we probably won't make updates for this, but still thanks for the report. Feedback is always welcome and maybe this helps someone else. I'm also forwarding this ahead in case we have some extra time to look into this.
Let me know if you still have questions, but otherwise I just hope you'll enjoy playing.
Cheers!
Changing the config is a bit more tricky than it seems (for an older game that doesn't have our latest build processes), and I'm afraid we won't be able to touch it easily...
That said, if you're not completely frustrated, there's a couple of simple things you could try to see if HD3D would still work in the game:
1) Try Trine Enchanted Edition. Maybe the HD3D-breaking changes never made it into it...
2) Download an older version of Trine 2. In Steam, go to Properties for the game, then under Betas choose "Old - Old v1.14". The feature has worked at some point in the game's lifecycle, so maybe we get lucky. Sadly looks like we don't have any old versions available for Trine EE.
But beyond these it's an uphill battle, HD3D was never a big focus for us. If you're an expert at toying with the 3D options, you could try one of the more general options and use some software to make it work I guess... but alas, my personal experience is limited to Nvidia's 3D Vision. I think HD3D was just a competitor of sorts to Nvidia and they both needed to use propriertary 3D technology at the time, and Nvidia was much more focused on it. We probably don't support any generic 3D stuff that was added in Win 8/10.
If nothing else, I too hope this post sheds some light on the issue so others won't have to spend time on something that seems to be broken in the game... Sorry!

I just saw the option and thought I would give it a try. I'm not a fan of this 3D fad anyway. (It's over already, right?)
In case of games that use it, I even quickly get a headache.
I just thought I would help the one guy that would actually like to play with it on and save them some debugging.
It would have been nice though if you would have removed the option, seeing it's prominent position. But I can totally understand your reluctance to dig into such an old game for an unused niche feature. Worth a shot though.
