I disagree, when you get owned again and again, you copy the best players, then when you can copy them perfectly, you will know the reason those are the best, or you discover their weaknesses. And you learn to counter them.
Some people will disagree, but this method produced the best players in your local MVC2 community. I think it will also apply here.
You have a point. Since my experience on such things were on an arcade, in which the players do face each other in real life so ask question and sometimes even ask for tutorials or help.
i've been an arcade gamer most of my life, but MVC3 wasn't my cup of tea originally. Mostly cause I'm a bigger fan of 6 button fighters like the original and I was kinda ok with MVC2. Something key to learning a fighting game in a way that isn't frustrating is playing it near the launch so you learn with other players. I played MVC2 when it came out. Same with CVS2 and SV5. These are the games I know best because I played them from day one. I feel like I learned them the way they were meant to be learned.
I don't doubt getting ♥♥♥♥ on by vets is a learning experience, but in a game where infinites are the norm, I can't really learn.
I say mash your way to victory, always worked for me in Nitroplus Blasterz (with video and screenshots to prove it!)
go into arcade mode or whatever sp mode the game has to get a feel of the game.
pick then the guys you want to learn and go to youtube to see what kind of kombos your char can do and learn them in the trainingsmode.
ready yourself up before you go to war ;)
I can't go online with how I am now. Having to fight and pick up evidence and switch modes. is going to take lots of practice. So if anyone can and/or wants to help that would be great. If not then I'm sure I'll manage in time.

youtube is your best friend.
the game is old and has a ♥♥♥♥ tone of tutorials/videos.
edit- lel, got ninjaed.
Lythero and Kageta the Final Boss are the main Phoenix Wright mains on Youtube. I'd suggest you look them up.
That being said, I can help a bit with theory.
First off, Phoenix Wright needs good "Get Off Me" assists. Ryu and Akuma's Tatsu kicks, Dr. Doom's Plasma Beam and Hidden Missiles, Magneto's Disruptor, Amaterasu's Cold Star, Dante's Jam Session, Sentinel's drones and Strider's Vajra are all good choices. I'm sure someone else can fill in with additional options.
Second, learn trial mode combos. I can't stress this enough. Against certain rushdown characters (read: Wolverine), you just can't afford to go around picking up evidence during your entire time outside of Turnabout mode. Granted, you won't be using this for damage (though it does definately help with that), but they can help you set up a TAC or DHC.
Third, figure out your objection setups. Phoenix Wright actually has some really good setups for his objections - even an unblockable if you're willing to spend a bar of meter on it.
Finally, raw tags are your friend with Phoenix Wright. Don't be afraid to tag out if you need to.
