Stick or Controller?
Hi guys,

New to fighting games in general. I have been watching umvc3 videos for a few years now. Dont own any consoles, only pc. Im hoping to get into this game when it releases for pc. Would a stick or a controller be better for execution? I read that some sticks are incompatible with the pc version. Not too sure about it though. All comments appreciated. Cheers!

Both controllers are used by pros and there's really no discrimination of each, but many people shoot for a stick because their button layout is tailor made for fighting games. Execution with a joystick rather than with a thumbpad will help you a lot more, since you don't have to worry about your fingers slipping off and you have much more precision. With buttons, controllers usually have fierce punch and roundhouse kick buttons on the LB and RB bumpers, making for a pretty odd layout. But with a stick, all the buttons are laid out on a single plane, giving you much more freedom to execute different moves; plus the buttons are bigger and therefore easier to press.

I had actually started off with buying a controller and it was a big improvement from a keyboard. Joystick motions were a lot easier, especially when you needed to do SPDs. I was able to manage as Rashid in SFV and pull off not-too-shabby Terry combos in KOF '98. But then after contemplating if I should go a step above and buy a stick for myself, I was glad I did, and I ditched my controller right then and there. So I'd generally reccomend a stick, but feel free to play with a controller as well.

If you are considering getting a stick, MadCatz and Hori have the stuff for you, though there are other pretty good sticks out there not manufactured by them. If MadCatz sticks seem expensive, try the HRAP4 Kai, my stick. It's a bit on the cheap end, if you'd go for $145 rather than $230 for a MadCatz TE2+. Once you pop that stick usb into your pc, it will automatically install the drivers from the get-go, so you can pretty much play your fighting games instantly. At least, that's what worked for me. Hope everything works out for you! :D

He pretty much nailed the whole conversation here. Its really up to personal preference but the way to go is Stick. Ive played a ton of console games, and a ton of fighting games on all different controllers but nothing at all seems to be 'better' then a stick for Fighting Games. Like Gbacon said, the button are all laid out on your right hand vs your thumb doing the primary mashing, as long as your brain can handle the buttons, you will see its the only way to play Fighting games. Found memories of this series and sticks also, I sucked Hard on MvC2 on PS2/Dreamcast but dear god arcade stick makes me SSJ on that game

Since this is a 4 button game a controller is best.

This is not a real fighting game like say Street Fighter this is a casual fighting game.
i will use my keyboard :)

I beg to differ. UMvC3 is very, VERY competitive. I don't understand what you mean by "casual fighting game," but if it's because of the button layout you are dead wrong, sir.

It always depends. I grew up playing on pads, but now almost always use a stick. My hands are kinda big and using certain pads is sometimes hard for me to use execution wise. I didn't start using sticks until I wanted to get actually good at fighting games. If you're new to the fighting game scene, I would say try starting with a nice pad before getting a stick because GOOD sticks are getting really expensive.

or you can just be a real og pc gamer and use keyboard, which, if you set the buttons right, actually isn't that bad.

what? lol what are you talkng about? 4 button doesnt mean that controller is best, it is litteraly up to each persons prefference.

Not sure how this is considered a casual fighter compared to street fighter. i think youve got some skewed opinions. you and your friends might of never played it serious but i gaurantee that this game is no casual fighter.
Use what feels comfortable to you and brings the best of your game. You can try all 3 input methods and see which one best suits you... See you online 😁

He's trying to stir up trouble. Better to not even reply. It's low quality bait.
