Trine Enchanted Edition Mac & Linux BETA
We’ve just released a BETA of Trine Enchanted Edition for Mac and Linux on Steam! The BETA also includes a Windows version to allow multiplayer between different operating systems.

Trine Enchanted Edition is a free upgrade to Trine that adds new content and features, such as online multiplayer, midlevel saving and improvements to visuals and gameplay aspects. Check out our blog[www.frozenbyte.com] for screenshots and more information.

Please remember these releases are on BETA stage, so you can still expect to run into a few issues here and there. Taking part in the BETA is free for all who own Trine on Steam. More info and instructions on how to take part below.

Trine Enchanted Edition does not replace the original Trine, so Mac and Windows users will be able to choose which version they wish to play from the game's launcher. All BETA users should be able to play together with each other regardless of their operating system. Please note that the BETA is not yet online compatible with the current release version, so online multiplayer with Windows players during the BETA is only possible if they are also taking part in the BETA.

How to take part in the BETA

Launching the BETA requires an access code (“TrineEEBetaNovember2014″). Follow the instructions below to unlock and launch the BETA. Windows users already have access to Trine Enchanted Edition, but they too can unlock the BETA, which enables online multiplayer with Linux and Mac users. Please see the System Requirements for each platform on the Steam Store Page.

Click here[www.frozenbyte.com] for pictured instructions on how to launch the BETA.

  1. Open Your Steam Library
  2. Right-click Trine and choose Properties
  3. Navigate to the BETAS tab
  4. Enter the following password to the access code field: TrineEEBetaNovember2014
  5. If the code does not work, try to restart your Steam client.
  6. Make sure you have the beta chosen from the upper “Select the beta you would like to opt into:” menu and then close the window.
  7. The game should download the update now. If the download does not start, try verifying your game files: Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Cache…
  8. Windows and Linux users can now skip to the last step.
  9. If you are playing on Mac, you will need to open the game from it’s file, so open the Properties Window again and navigate to the Local Files tab and choose Browse Local Files.
  10. Mac users can now open the game by launching the trine1 application. It’s located at the _enchanted_edition_ folder
  11. Make sure the Enchanted Edition is chosen from a drop down menu in the game’s launcher when you start Trine.

Feedback, Bug Reports & Questions

We’d love to hear your feedback and appreciate you taking the time and interest in taking part in the BETA! The best way to ensure we receive your feedback is to either email us (support[at]frozenbyte[dot]com) or post in this thread.

When submitting feedback, please remember to clearly mention what platform you are using (Linux/Mac/Windows) and the BETA version number (found from the bottom-right corner of the game’s Main Menu).

If you are sending a bug report, please try to include a clear description of the issue (you can include pictures as well) and as much details as you can think of. For example we'd like to know:
  • How did the bug happen?
  • Does it happen if you try it again, or was it a one-time thing?
  • Your operating system, game version number and your other system information
  • Were you playing singleplayer, local co-op or online multiplayer?
  • If you were playing online multiplayer, do you know what operating system the others you were playing with were using?
  • Anything else you think could be related

We hope you enjoy the enchantment!

The skipping of cinematics should work as intended. How many times you have to press the Esc key? It's possible that you have to press the key more than twice.

I think it's just that after you press Esc and the prompt to press it again appears, Esc key presses are ignored for a short duration. If I time it right (long enough after the first Esc, but before the prompt disappears again), the second Esc successfully skips the cinematic. I guess the delay is intentional as the whole point is not to accidentally skip cinematics.

We couldn't reproduce the not obscured pixel issue. On what kind of configuration (system specs) did you see the line? What resolution were you using? Did you try different settings?

My system is:
OS: Gentoo Linux
GPU: Radeon HD 7950
OpenGL driver: radeonsi (Mesa 10.5.0-devel git-4aec928)

This happens at both Low and Very High graphics quality, but seems to require at least 2xSSAA for anti-aliasing (didn't try higher settings) - there were no unobscured pixels without AA and with just FXAA.

The resolution selected in the launcher also changes things: with 1920×1200 (my monitor's native resolution) and 1920×1080 the unobscured pixels are on the right edge of the screen while with 1680×1050 they are on the bottom. 1600×1200 doesn't have any unobscured pixels at all.

Other issues are something we are aware of and are working on a fix. Hopefully we'll have one up soon.

That's good to know. Thanks for all your work to support Linux.

And here are some answer to those who still are experiencing bugs.

I'm getting this same exact behaviour on any resolution, fullscreen or windowed on also Linux Mint, but with nvidia 8600 SLI (with SLI mode enabled or disabled) and 4 gig of RAM. Game freezes pretty much immediately at the main screen (just before the main menu proper). Once I did manage to actually get as far as displaying the menu, but it still froze (build 499 if that helps any). (Not the whole machine froze, just the game. Had to force quit.) Also no log file for me, either.

P.S. Love your guys' games. Really enjoyed Trine 2 a lot, and I'm not generally a fan of platform type games. Keep up the great work. :)

Thank you for your support. :)

Are you using two monitors? Especially then the game could be freezing because of a wrong resolution setting. So, you could try changing it. You can do this by editing the following lines to match your resolution from the game's options.txt (located at ~/.frozenbyte/Trine1/options.txt).
    setOption(renderingModule, "ForceFullscreenWidth", 1920) setOption(renderingModule, "ForceFullscreenHeight", 1080)

You could try using only one screen if you used both before.

Let me know how it goes!

Nope. Only using a single monitor, and checking the config file turns up that the game IS running at the monitor's native resolution of 1440x900, apparently, so that shouldn't be the problem either. Will try a few more things before I just give up and wait for an eventual bugfix to come down the pipe. Thanks much for trying, though. I appreciate it muchly. :)

Also, I notice the config is in the user's home folder under a (hidden) .frozenbyte folder. While this used to be the standard thing to do, the XDG FreeDesktop standards have proposed putting such files under .config (and .local and .cache) to reduce home folder clutter. It would be nice if more game developers would jump on that bandwagon sooner rather than later. ;)

Playing this on Ubuntu 14.04.1, Intel i5 4670K, Intel HD 4600, Mesa 10.1.3 , RAM 8GB (Viper Dual channel 1600MHz DDR3 2x4GB)

Trine v2.12 build 499
i strongly recommend running a later mesa than 10.1, you can get 10.5 from xorg-edgers

There's a new update!

As always, we appreciate feedback, so please let us know if you have questions or are still encountering issues or experience new ones. :)

Fixed Linux gamepad bindings

This Update seems to have improved using my Moga Pro gamepad to play Trine :)

But pushing the "Select" button on the pad still lets the game seg fault immediately...

Did you follow all the step-by-step instructions? You can find them here.[www.frozenbyte.com] Please make sure to also choose the correct Beta from the dropdown menu, like Cheeseness said. If the game still does not begin downloading the update, you could try to verify the game files again (even though you already tried that). Sometimes trying to actually launch the game after enabling the Beta can also trigger the update.

I hope this helps. :) Let me know how it goes.

It didn't help. Here is what I tried this time:

Trine -> Delete local content
Trine -> Properties -> Betas ->
enter TrineEEBetaNovember2014
Check code -> Access code correct...
Select trine_ee_beta - Patch test (there is only 1 beta in the list)
Close

"6. The game should download the update now. "
No, it won't download, because I didn't click install yet.
"If the download does not start, try verifying your game files: Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Cache…"
I can't do that, Verify button is disabled.

So I try the install button.
It asks where to install.
I click next to use the default location.
Click next again without choosing icons or shortcuts.
Download is immediately finished.

I try Properties -> Local files -> Verify -
"All files successfull verified"

And it still won't work. Missing executable.

Back to Properties -> Betas -> The beta is still selected

Could you tell a bit more about your setup (sorry to ask again, if you already did in some previous post)? We have few Moga Pros here at the office, but they don't seem to be detected at all (we've only used them for Android development). Are you the controller via USB or Bluetooth, are there any special drivers / packages installed etc.?

Everything works for a few minutes on GTX 750 nvidia, AMD64, 8 ram using Debian Unstable usin nvidia non-free drivers, KDE enviroment...then I lose control of the mouse.. It goes to the top left corner of the screen working properly now an then but making impossible to play. Thanks a lot (;

update . I have changed it to "run in window" option and everything is working fine! It's a fullscreen issue then.

A new update! :) Remember that you can also always find the changelog from the game's installation folder:

Trine Enchanted Edition changelog
v2.12 (build 500) - December 4th, 2014
OS X BETA & Linux BETA hotfix3

Technical
  • Fixed rare crash issue (all platforms)
  • Fixed glowing magic flowers in various levels for Linux & Mac OS X
  • Fixed specular lighting issues in various levels for Linux & Mac OS X

Info
  • Only v2.12 builds are online multiplayer compatible with this build (check the version number from game's main menu)
Nice! Played it through on Arch Linux (Arch Bang) 64bits, NVidia GK104 [GeForce GTX 670] on a Xeaon 5500/Core i7 onboard Audio (Intel 82801JI) without any problems. Just the "Achievment System" seems to be unable to remeber my achievements.

Unfortunately I am not completely sure why you seem to be unable to download the correct version. It sounds like this has more to do with Steam than the game itself. Have you had trouble downloading any other games?

The instructions on our blog post were made with the assumption that you have the game installed. Steam naturally does not add any files if the game isn't.

You could try to exit the BETA (Properties → BETAS → Select "NONE - Opt out of all beta programs" from the drop-down menu), then verify your game files again if the option is available, after which you can try to enter the BETA again and possibly verify your game files once more.

If it still does not work, you could try refreshing your Steam Files (url=https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3134-TIAL-4638]instructions here[/url]). It's recommended you delete the Trine folder from steam/steamapps/common before you do this (it's possible the folder was created even though the game itself didn't download). You can try to enter the BETA again after doing this.

I hope this helped. Let me know how it goes.

Glad to hear it's working now. You could also try to set the Windowed mode too Fullscreen. Here's how to do this:
  1. Open options.txt. You can find it from %appdata%/Trine1 (just copy that to your Explorer and you'll find it).
  2. Locate the following lines:
setOption(renderingModule, "MaximizeWindow", false) setOption(renderingModule, "WindowTitleBar", true)
  3. Change the values at the end of the lines; "false" to "true" after MaximizeWindow and "true" to "false" after WindowTitleBar. Save the file and launch the game.

Unfortunately, some desktop environments can show their tool bars while playing in the borderless windowed mode, this can be a bit annoying. There are some extensions that can help with this. Let me know if you need help with this. :)

So far we have not reproduced any achievement issues, but we could look into this if you tell a bit more. Could you clarify what you mean by this? Are you unable to get achievements?
The end credits are not skippable.

I worked around this bug with kill -9. Alt+F4 works too, but kill -9 feels better.

It worked pretty much out of the box.

I use it over Bluetooth in B mode (which makes it apprear as an HID).

I use Ubuntu 14.04.1 and I installed jstest-gtk, but not much configuration needed.
Under "Calibration" I changed Axis 4 and 5 "CenterMin to "0".

But it already worked without the change under Calibration, change just makes the R2 and L2 buttons work better.

The Select button does not work at all (not detected in jstest-gtk).

I hope this helps :)

Thanks, Pete. That should help us reproduce the issue and hopefully fix it.

It seems like i'm gonna jump into testing linux version on tuesday because codenamed "omega" driver for amd gpus will be released.
I'm curious if they will provide VSR (Virtual Super Resolution, amd's implementation of downscaling, like DSR from nvidia) on linux as well. If they will so i will provide tests of it in both trine games, obviously.
