Trine Enchanted Edition Mac & Linux BETA
We’ve just released a BETA of Trine Enchanted Edition for Mac and Linux on Steam! The BETA also includes a Windows version to allow multiplayer between different operating systems.

Trine Enchanted Edition is a free upgrade to Trine that adds new content and features, such as online multiplayer, midlevel saving and improvements to visuals and gameplay aspects. Check out our blog[www.frozenbyte.com] for screenshots and more information.

Please remember these releases are on BETA stage, so you can still expect to run into a few issues here and there. Taking part in the BETA is free for all who own Trine on Steam. More info and instructions on how to take part below.

Trine Enchanted Edition does not replace the original Trine, so Mac and Windows users will be able to choose which version they wish to play from the game's launcher. All BETA users should be able to play together with each other regardless of their operating system. Please note that the BETA is not yet online compatible with the current release version, so online multiplayer with Windows players during the BETA is only possible if they are also taking part in the BETA.

How to take part in the BETA

Launching the BETA requires an access code (“TrineEEBetaNovember2014″). Follow the instructions below to unlock and launch the BETA. Windows users already have access to Trine Enchanted Edition, but they too can unlock the BETA, which enables online multiplayer with Linux and Mac users. Please see the System Requirements for each platform on the Steam Store Page.

Click here[www.frozenbyte.com] for pictured instructions on how to launch the BETA.

  1. Open Your Steam Library
  2. Right-click Trine and choose Properties
  3. Navigate to the BETAS tab
  4. Enter the following password to the access code field: TrineEEBetaNovember2014
  5. If the code does not work, try to restart your Steam client.
  6. Make sure you have the beta chosen from the upper “Select the beta you would like to opt into:” menu and then close the window.
  7. The game should download the update now. If the download does not start, try verifying your game files: Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Cache…
  8. Windows and Linux users can now skip to the last step.
  9. If you are playing on Mac, you will need to open the game from it’s file, so open the Properties Window again and navigate to the Local Files tab and choose Browse Local Files.
  10. Mac users can now open the game by launching the trine1 application. It’s located at the _enchanted_edition_ folder
  11. Make sure the Enchanted Edition is chosen from a drop down menu in the game’s launcher when you start Trine.

Feedback, Bug Reports & Questions

We’d love to hear your feedback and appreciate you taking the time and interest in taking part in the BETA! The best way to ensure we receive your feedback is to either email us (support[at]frozenbyte[dot]com) or post in this thread.

When submitting feedback, please remember to clearly mention what platform you are using (Linux/Mac/Windows) and the BETA version number (found from the bottom-right corner of the game’s Main Menu).

If you are sending a bug report, please try to include a clear description of the issue (you can include pictures as well) and as much details as you can think of. For example we'd like to know:
  • How did the bug happen?
  • Does it happen if you try it again, or was it a one-time thing?
  • Your operating system, game version number and your other system information
  • Were you playing singleplayer, local co-op or online multiplayer?
  • If you were playing online multiplayer, do you know what operating system the others you were playing with were using?
  • Anything else you think could be related

We hope you enjoy the enchantment!

Same crash here, at the beginning of the loading screen, just after settings selection.

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T, Radeon HD 6950 with radeon libre driver (32&64bit) from oibaf ppa on ubuntu 14.04 & 3.17.1 kernel.

Can't see any clue related to (S)SSE3/4 in /var/log/{syslog,kernel.log}

$ dmesg | grep 'invalid opcode'

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep flags :

My CPU doesn't seems to have sse3, but sse, sse2 and sse4a.
I see no mention of ssse3 (not sse3!) there. You should be seeing the same crash as I do.

Does anyone know how to start trine in a more verbose mode?
Easiest way should be to run Steam from a terminal window and just leave that open. That said, I grabbed relevant bits from /proc – command line, value of LD_LIBRARY_PATH – and was able to start it that way. I don't recall seeing anything useful (presumably, it's doing nothing with SIGILL), and I've not looked for any relevant command-line switches.

Right now, seems best to wait for bug fixes.

Hi, I just can't launch the game at all. It closes when it reaches about a quarter of the first screen (the one with the Trine logo) progress bar. I tried several times, even rebooting in between.

I've just downloaded the game so I assume I have the latest version.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (64 bit)
AMD Phenom(tm) 8650 Triple-Core Processor × 3 (2 GB RAM)
GeForce 9400 GT/PCIe/SSE2
nVidia official 340.58 driver

Thank you!

Another one with a CPU lacking SSSE3 (see prior postings in this thread). Hopefully, the devs will soon release a build without this particular dependency…

(Also, no need to reboot. Kernel upgrades, some kernel bugs and some crashes involving the graphics hardware need that, yes, but a game which fails to start normally won't.)

You have to activate closed beta channel and choose it to run the game.

This is what happens when I don't read directions. Thanks!

Menu screen looks fine, after that graphics are just messed up:

* Linux 3.17.2 (64 bit)
* GTX 660 TI, nvidia-343.22
Hello everyone!

With a little luck we should be able to patch the Linux beta tomorrow with following changes:
- Game should run on wider variety of CPUs
- Fullscreen should work better with multi-monitor setups*
- TargetSmooth30FPS defaults to false
- Improved mouse support
- Minor optimizations

* There is still an issue with detecting on which display the game will launch on, which can cause issues if the displays have different resolutions.

We're also looking in to the graphical glitches mentioned here, but it is unlikely that they'll make to the next build.

Thank you for all the feedback (and patience), it has been very helpful for us!

Thanks FB_JussiE I'll be keeping my fingers crossed. :D

Thanks to all of you for your support and feedback! :) We're really glad to see you guys this active.

We're looking into the issues mentioned here at the moment. Meanwhile, here are few of the most common issues and solutions for them / questions about them.

Mac

Black Screen On Start-up

There's an issue with the Mac build that can cause the game to have a black screen when you try to start it. We are looking into this. Meanwhile, fortunately the workaround for this is simple: just command+tab twice to get the game working.

The Last King of Scotland původně napsal:
On Mac OS, the game has a black screen on startup, you have to command tab twice to get it working. Also performance is pretty bad on my Macbook Air on Very Low.
Sorry to hear about the performance issue. Does your Macbook meet the game's system requirements? You can check those at the Trine Enchanted Edition Store Page.

You mentioned you're running the game on Very Low settings, but did you also try changing other graphics settings, such as anti-aliasing or resolution? If not, I suggest you try those.

If you feel that your Mac meets the system requirements and are still experiencing these issues, could you give us detailed information about your setting (OS, video card, processor, etc)?

Linux

Game Doesn't Launch / Crashes On Start-up

If the game does not launch, there are a few possible solutions for this.
  • Make sure you have properly opted into the BETA. The Linux version of Trine Enchanted Edition is still in BETA stage, so even though it already appears at the Steam Store Page, you will need to unlock the BETA to launch the game. Click here[www.frozenbyte.com] for instructions on how to do this.
  • Currently SSSE3 is required for the game to work – so unfortunately the game won't run without it. We are looking into this and are working on enhancing compatibility in later patches and will hopefully get this fixed in the next patch. Stay tuned for updates. :)
  • If neither of the above solutions work, please try to verify your game files: right-click Trine in your Steam Library → Properties → Local Files → “verify integrity...”
  • If nothing works, please report that to us so that we know you are still experiencing this issue. Please also include detailed information about your configuration (you can link your earlier post, if you've already mentioned this information previously).

Workaround for Multiple Monitors and Custom Resolutions

Unfortunately there are currently some issues when playing the game on fullscreen while using multiple monitors. We are looking into this at the moment!

Meanwhile, you could try to edit the options.txt located at ~/.frozenbyte/Trine1/options.txt and make the following changes:
setOption(renderingModule, "ForceFullscreenWidth", 1680) setOption(renderingModule, "ForceFullscreenHeight", 1050)

Graphic Glitches & Issues

If you encounter graphics issues, please first try to verify your game files: right-click Trine in your Steam Library → Properties → Local Files → “Verify integrity...”

If that does not help, please tell us detailed information about your issue. Some of you have already posted screenshots, which has been helpful (thanks!) - but in addition to that, we'd like to know if you have encountered these issues repeatedly, or only once. Do they always occur in the same, exact places (and if so, where), at random places throughout the place or constantly during the whole game? Please also give us detailed information about your setup (graphics card, drivers, distro).
I can confirm the invalid opcode "bug", game crashing in loading screen:
> dmesg [19213.401811] trine1_linux_32[6966] trap invalid opcode ip:8de8c80 sp:ff948900 error:0 in trine1_linux_32bit[8048000+24f9000] [21091.681470] trine1_linux_32[7123] trap invalid opcode ip:8de8c80 sp:ffb7bad0 error:0 in trine1_linux_32bit[8048000+24f9000] [21188.666263] trine1_linux_32[7233] trap invalid opcode ip:8de8c80 sp:ff9cd860 error:0 in trine1_linux_32bit[8048000+24f9000] [21335.941007] trine1_linux_32[7575] trap invalid opcode ip:8de8c80 sp:ffee5920 error:0 in trine1_linux_32bit[8048000+24f9000]

Thanks for the patch, I can confirm that it works without SSSE3 now.

However, there are some issues with the shadows and lighting:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=343511708
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=343511726
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=343511741
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=343511760

The shadows aren't smooth and as a result there is also noticeable flickering.

Further (at least in the Wizard screenshots), specular highlights are missing, as are the moon, stars and bloom/blur in the background.

Compare this with the official screenshot from the store page:

http://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/35700/ss_db7f31ccc756673a6f3dabd7cf6fb5c30983bc26.jpg?t=1415972545

Settings:
Resolution: 1920×1200
Refresh rate: Automatic
Anti-aliasing: High (FXAA + 2xSSAA)
Vertical sync: Off
Graphics detail level: Very High

OS: Gentoo Linux
Graphics card: Radeon HD 7950
Graphics driver: radeonsi (Mesa built from git just now)

I don't get these glitches with the original Trine port or with Trine 2 on the same system:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=343511610
It's working here, I didn't notice any of the bugs, because I was busy getting killed repeatedly by skeletons. hehe.
Today's update fixed my problem with it crashing during the first loading screen directly after the launcher. Seems to run great now, though I haven't had a chance to do any extensive gameplay testing just yet.
orb původně napsal:
Did you install the game after or before you switched to the "trine_ee_beta"

I wasn't aware of any beta stuff. I just saw trine appear on linux side and clicked install. After enabling the beta, nothing changed. It still downloads 0 bytes and claims that it's ready. Removing local content and re-downloading doesn't help. Verifying says that everything is ok. ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Trine is empty.
