Trine
Badly disappointed
Bought the Trine complete edition, with both Trine and Trine 2, mainly because it allows co-op play, and since I am going overseas for 6 weeks, hubby and I thought it would be a nice way to keep in touch. But now we found out that we need to go out and buy a second copy (!?) because steam does not allow us firstly to register the same game under two accounts, and secondly, because even when sharing the game, we still cannot play it together as it kicks either one or the other out of the game! If it was stated on the package before we bought it, great stuff! I would have been forewarned and uncomplaining. I feel cheated.

I understand you, but that's not Trine fault, it's a Steam thing: when you "buy a game", you are getting a license to use that game on that account, and in the terms and conditions you agree that that account is only yours. So in the end, you are not "buying" the game, you are getting a license of the game only for yourself.

More or less.

Bought the retail version. In a physical shop.

"Trine 2 also lets you play your adventure cooperatively: locally or online, invite two of your friends to join in your adventure! Combine your powers, and find new ways to overcome obstacles, puzzles and monsters!"

Now, where does that say your friends need to buy the game as well? It is a family purchase, and now only one person can use it?

*EDIT: I do feel that if you are going to publish the thing in a physical format, while the artwork is nice, the packaging should explicitly state that only one license key is in the box... In the same vein the packaging also states "Internet connection required for product activation", not "Internet connection required for product activation and to download 4GB of game " (nevermind the additional 3GB or so for Trine, but that was stated at least). Surprises all round.

Are you able to play the game from the physical copy from outside Steam? In that case, it may be possible that one of you can play through the Steam version and the other one with the physical copy.
NightMareHooves Oct 14, 2014 @ 12:12pm
Nope. The disc contains only a download link, and 2.6GB of original soundtrack.
SillyWalk Oct 14, 2014 @ 12:25pm
And that download link redirects to Steam? Maybe it could redirect to a drm-free version?

Can't work on 2 pc at same time...that why need second account for this cause especially for coop...

You shouldn't be disappointed. You bought one copy of that game and that entitles you to play the game on one computer/device at once (and yes, this is how family sharing works as well). you can play co-op on one device with a second and third controller but for online co-op you need a second copy, naturally.

You can share games on steam i believe.

Here is a guide: http://www.maximumpc.com/how_share_steam_games_2014

Did you try it yet?

Would have taken you less time to google search steam game sharing than coming here to post about something that has nothing to do with the game itself, but steam.

Though not sure if it works for games that have online drm.

OP - unless explicitly stated, that is the way software licensing works. You buy the game which entitles you to install under one account, and only one user may use the account at any one time.

The game has local co-op, meaning if you're sitting at the same computer, you can both play with just a single copy of the game. If you want to play online, then each of you will need their own copy.

Unless a game or application specifically allows you to install multiple copies, this is just the way it is.

That wouldn't work: only one person can use a shared library at each time; if the owner of the library starts playing something, the person who was using it has 5 minutes to exit the game until it closes automatically.

it's not their fault. If you even read the faq for steam sharing it says library cannot be used by 2 at the same time. A highly idiotic feature that makes the family sharing thing near useless and more exploited for bypassing bans for cheating then sharing. but in all honesty you should have done research. Trine and Trine 2 by themselves are beautiful and amazing games. Be disappointed in Valve... who have recently been riding the coattails of their monopoly's success.

Also in all honesty, are you that naive to feel that you can buy one game and register it to multiple people? 4 packs exist on steam for a reason similarly when games require third party DRM or account creation, do you also try to register them to multiple accounts? I'm assuming you are new to purchasing games because ...what you said..honestly made me cringe.

edit: i see you only have 2 games which confirms my point. Do try to be more rational when considering how companies make money. If you can register a game to multiple accounts ...hell..why doesn't GabeN connect his account to the entirety of steam? because no one would then buy games

Not exactly, anyone can play the copy you bought. As far as I know there is not any game out there where you can buy one copy, and then your gf or other friends also get to have a copy just because its a co-op. Otherwise Borderlands would've come with four copies, one for each player, would be nice I know. I'm not trying to be a ♥♥♥♥♥ or anything just letting you know that you in particular are not getting screwed, we've all been getting screwed for a very long time, hope you find something fun to do with your gf;-) Msg. me, it's on sale, **I will buy you the copy you need.**:healthvial::rosebud:

Thanks for all the help gents... Yes, only have two games. That is because the only way to play was to download and join steam. Never had it before, so excusse me for being highly ticked-off when buying a physical game copy in a store filled with non-gaming idiots, that it turns out I need two copies for the purpose I bought it in the first place.

And yeas, did google family sharing, activated it, and lo and behold, there is some fine print that does not allow you to play out of the same library at the same time.

So all in all, I am very tempted to take it back and demand my money back. Because with the exchange rate as it is, it will cost 3 to 4 times more to buy in dollars.

Very beautiful and nice game, but the platform is horrible.

Not trying to defend Steam here, but would you care to name a platform or game, that allows you to play from different locations at the same time while owning only one copy of it (apart from free to play games, obviously)? Every commercial multiplayer game out there requires each player to own a copy. That's how it's always been.
It's not the platforms' fault. You could not play it on different devices (at the same time) anyway (without violating copyright laws).

Btw. the games are currently on sale on steam, i guess $4,99 (can't be sure i'm from Germany) that's a bargain, i think (though I guess you're not living in the USA)

I'm sorry to be a little harsh and tell you: you can't have your cake and share it, too.

You are absurd, no game allows you to play it on different accounts, no matter if family relatives.

The game is for one person (except local coop), it's like when you buy a ticket to a rollercoaster, the ticket is for one person at a time no matter who that person is, same for every game and I think it's normal.
