Report a translation problem
At least when I tried this with the Steam version of Trine Enchanted Edition just now, the gate opens when you get close to it. So, even though the checkpoint besides the Skeleton King can be activated, it should be possible to get back from the earlier checkpoint as well.
There has been similar issues with this kind of gates before, so it's possible there is a bug with this. However, we haven't gotten any additional reports about this and we are really busy with Trine 3, so unfortunately it might be a while before we have time to look into this.
If you experience this yourself (or if anyone else reading this does), please let us know – any information could help us to look into the issue. Here is a list of what kind of information could help, but all feedback on the subject is appreciated. :)
Also if you encounter this problem, I recommend trying to see if the gate does open or trying to restart the level, which most likely will help. While playing, it's also good to go right next to checkpoints to make sure they activate properly.
If you still have the link, could you also link the video you were watching? Seeing it might help us to determine what happened or otherwise help with the possible investigation.
Cheers! :)
EDIT: it appears Steam screws up the link when it embeds the player by removing the "t=1240" component, so just edit it to form a proper link:

Seems like there really is a bug in the video, which could have something to do with the Multiplayer Mode. Unfortunately I can't promise a fix, but we'll try to look into this when we have time.
Thanks again for the report! :)
Thank you for reporting this and for sharing the solution!
We still haven't looked into this but will try to do so, especially if we get more reports.
Could you confirm that this happened to you on the Steam version of the game? Also were you playing the co-op online or locally? This information will help us to look into this.
Thanks in advance! :)
Thank you for the report!
Checking if you can reproduce the problem could help, but you can also just leave this to us.
As I said before, unfortunately I can't promise a fix but we'll definitely look into it. Thanks again! :)
1. Win8.1
2. SP
2. Multiplayer, 1 xbox 360 controller one mouse and keyboard
3. v2.12 and build 510
Same thing happened to me, died on the boss and the gate was closed and would not open for us. Skeleton was not visible to try to kill via boxes or planks.
Recently saw another Trine Enchanted Edition LP where a boss (near the end of Fangle Forest) that was already missing a "long" time back was still missing... so the Skeleton thing will probably stay too.
Win 8.1, Singleplayer in the Enchanted Edition.
v2.12 build: 510
This issue is not frequent and we haven't had much luck with it, so unfortunately there is no fix coming. Still I hope this workaround helped.
Let me know if you have any questions. Cheers!
Had to restart the whole level.
