You could however try to use Steam’s settings to emulate the controllers, this might be the easiest with Big Picture Mode. Also using other programs is possible.
Other options are getting another emulator program to get the controllers recognised as Xbox 360 controllers, as Trine does support those, or just try binding the buttons from the in-game Settings.

With the controller on open Steam in the Big Picture Mode, click on the Configurations Gear on top right side. Click on Controller Settings. Mark the 1, 3 and 5 boxes: 1 Guide Button Focuses Steam, 3 XBOX Configuration Support, 5 Generic Gamepad configuration Support.
I use a GameSir generic controller that was designed copying the xBox controller, so for me those chekiing 3 boxes made it work fine. =]
