If that doesn't help, try verifying the game cache to make sure it's not an issue with the game's files. You can do this by right clicking Trine in your Steam library, then going to Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files.

That's very odd. That gate should be open by default, there's no mechanism for opening it. It seems like something has bugged out pretty badly with the last level.
Unfortunately I couldn't find any records about this happening before, so I can only guess what might have happened. Did you try verifying the game cache? If that didn't help, try restarting the level from the main menu by going to Single Player and selecting the level from the list (instead of using Resume Game). This should reset the level.
If that still doesn't help, we can try resetting the game's settings. To do this, go to %appdata%/Trine1 (you can just copy-paste that in Windows Explorer and you should find it). There's a file called options.txt there. Delete it to reset the game's settings. Note that this will reset any settings you might have changed in the game, so you will need to redo them.
