If they would change multiple people being able to be in the same corpse/container I would 100% play this game. I'm not playing another minute when teammates just sit back, do nothing, wait for me to kill something, and then run in and steal all the items from me even though I am in the container/corpse. Every single team I have played on operates like this, because they can. Everyone answer is, oh join a Discord and find a small group of people to play with. A few weeks ago this would've been a positive review, but it's clear that one of the biggest problems with this game is the way that progression within a season creates an incredibly lopsided experience.

1. Powering-up is linear... until it very abruptly isn't. The gulf between what you get from blue salvage upgrades and purple salvage upgrades is enormous for some factions. Going from adding a few points of some stat or being able to buy a gun with green mods doesn't put you in the ballpark of someone buying self-revives and bubble shields. This creates a situation where people who are further along in the upgrades have their ability to successfully extract increase dramatically because of those upgrades, which lets them get further ahead, while the people lagging behind get bottlenecked by not being able to successfully extract.

2. The threat is almost never worth the pay-off, often for completely artificial reasons. Various systems, mechanics, and events exist to allow players to interact with map events or PvE threats for a payoff. The most worthwhile ones include artificially tacked-on punishments for doing so. Example: engaging a UESC Warden (basically a randomly-spawned boss fight) broadcasts a text message to every other player in the lobby that you are doing so. Why? To make ganking easier. It would clearly be asking too much for any would-be ganker to note that the Warden is on the map, and take up a position nearby to HEAR that the fight has started, and capitalize on that information-- Bungie decided they needed to be spoonfed it. The end result of this is that attacking the Warden if you aren't already basically kitted out with better stuff than it will give you is pointless, because you'll take too long and get third partied.

3. Legibility is nonexistent. If you get killed by a player, you get their name and how much damage they did. That's it. Any kind of information that might help you get better at the game by way of a post-mortem is basically kept from you. After a certain point you eventually learn all of the weapon icons so that helps a little... until you're dealing with some bizarre interaction or overtuned mod combination and have absolutely no idea how you died. Got one-shotted by a shotgun at 30+ meters? Seems pretty suspicious... except that there's a gold mod for the basic shotgun that gives it a range of 120m. Do you have any way of knowing this from in-game knowledge? None whatsoever!

4. The economy is a disaster. The Trace Status system ensures that gear inflation is kept under control by limiting the number of times a weapon or piece of equipment can be looted. After a certain number of times it changes hand, it crumbles into dust. Sounds great... Until you put the work in to kill a team that probably wiped multiple lobbies with their kit, only to pop their bag open and discover you don't get even a crumb of gold or purple loot. Is there any limit to your ability to drop with said loot over and over again? Nope, *you* can get a gold weapon and use it from the second you pick it up until server reset. The only limitation is on the ability of someone who kills you to get anything out of it. The system makes gear always favor the person who drops with it, and only ever penalizes the person looting it from the former.

5. Cryo Archive basically ruined the game. It is an incredibly challenging and invigorating map to play... And the meta very quickly devolved into spawn-rushing and map-wiping to allow your team to breathe easy and loot at leisure. Marathon went from being an extraction shooter to a Battle Royale with an extraction shooter as the after-party once you've genocided the map. Teams that can do this regularly due to gear advantage and familiarity with the map (which you have limited time access to and can't run as a free kit for the sake of learning it), just get better and better gear, which allows them to continue wiping out teams on whatever lobby they want to butcher.

6. Progression gets bottlenecked by exfiltration. There comes a point where you are SEVERELY limited in your ability to make any progress at all without exfiltration. Early game priority contracts allow you to get a decent amount of salvage and rewards flowing simply by completing on-map objectives, even if you die before exfiltrating. Obviously an exfil is preferable, but you still get somewhere even without it, which softens the blow of getting run over by a team with a gear advantage looking for easy stomps, or just exfil camped by someone you couldn't possibly preempt. This combined with point 1 leaves players who get bottlenecked with basically no recourse for progression other than brainlessly running over and over with the sole objective of "Get the ONE type of salvage I need" and if they can't, the run is basically wasted.

7. There are, functionally, only three weapons in the game: The Bully SMG, the WSTR shotgun, and the Longshot sniper rifle. Every single other weapon is rendered redundant by these three. If you're at medium-long range, you're an idiot for not using the Longshot. If you're at close range, you're going to be insta-killed by the WSTR. If you're a little outside of close range, the Bully is simply unbeatable. And if that wasn't trouble enough, it feels like a mid-2000s FPS with the other predominant strategy: Wildly spamming grenades, because the time between throws is nonexistent, and the damage/effects are incredibly potent. The faction stores only sell a VERY limited stock of grenades, so if you aren't getting clean exfils regularly, you're not going to have enough to play your PVP drops to that strat. Hope the other guy you're fighting has the same limitation!

A lot of these problems will be alleviated with the quarterly season resets... until they re-emerge as the exact same pattern falls into place, because as it currently stands, the underlying systems don't have any real way to mitigate the season creep that we're already seeing.

Marathon is a solid game with high potential, but the real question is whether Bungie can sustain it for the long term.

Having poured hundreds of hours into extraction shooters like Escape from Tarkov, Hunt: Showdown, Delta Force, and Arc Raiders, I can say Marathon definitely earns its place among them but not without its own problems. If you love PVP and have a group to play with this game is for you but with such little content in the game I can't fully recommend it at the moment.

The Good

At its core, Marathon hits most marks for an extraction shooter, offering the tight gunplay and polished mechanics expected from a Bungie title. The environments and performance are major highlights; unlike many genre peers plagued by bland urban settings and technical hitches, Marathon runs smoothly. This is critical in a PvPvE setting where a single performance stutter can mean the difference between life and death.

Expanding on the gunplay, the TTK is very short depending on your gear. Veterans of previous Bungie titles will recognize classics like the Halo-style Plasma Pistol and Battle Rifle. The addition of various attachments adds a welcome layer of complexity by augmenting how each weapon functions. Furthermore, the looting experience is more streamlined than other titles. There is a refreshing lack of "garbage" loot; every item either serves as a resource for faction ranks or can be equipped for combat.

The game is also less punishing than its competitors. There is no lockout timer for running free kits or playing as "Rook"—the game's analogue to Tarkov’s Scav. While the balancing is questionable since skilled players can easily "zero-to-hero," the accessibility is unmatched. During the launch window, queue times were literally seconds. Even if you died instantly, you could mash space bar and be back in the action within moments.

When playing with friends, team fights are exhilarating and fast-paced, offering various strategies for tackling PvP. The game is forgiving, allowing you to resurrect fallen teammates even after a long period. However, this introduces the tactical necessity of ensuring a full squad wipe, or else that team may return to hunt you down later in the run. The playable classes also offer hero-shooter levels of flexibility, which is where my opinion begins to split.

The Bad

After the initial honeymoon phase, several balancing problems became evident. Marathon feels like it was originally structured as a battle royale before pivoting toward an extraction shooter; you can see the original "skeleton" peering through at several points.

The Apex Legends-style heroes possess meta-defining abilities that shape the game in unavoidable ways. While most extraction shooters thrive on the solo experience, Marathon leans heavily into three-man squads. You can play solo, but the game clearly wasn't designed for it. Solos almost exclusively play the Assassin for the cloak—and why wouldn't you? This leads to a player base that uses stealth to dodge PvE entirely and ambush others. When a whole lobby is invisible, the first person to make a sound is the first to die.

The enemy types are also quite bland, consisting mostly of the same UESC robots across every map. While this isn't a unique problem in the genre, it feels like an afterthought here. Bungie has begun to lean into the lore with the introduction of the first true alien boss in the Cryo map, but most of the player base will never experience it. The difficulty is reminiscent of Tarkov’s Labs, and the heavy emphasis on PvP makes the PvE content feel secondary.

Matchmaking is another concern, as it seems to prioritize similarly leveled accounts rather than a variable pool. This means the more you play, the "sweatier" the lobbies become with no way to backtrack. The auto-fill option is equally frustrating; without a consistent group, you’ll often find teammates bringing in free kits because there is no way to enforce kit-worth requirements besides ranked or Cryo.

Finally, which may be a derisive point, loot is too easy to achieve. Due to the game's current scale, it only took a few days to acquire mostly purple gear. With three-month wipe cycles, this short metagame curve is a problem. There is no extended period where players duke it out with "gray" gear or feel the genuine excitement of finding a rare blue item. While the maps are aesthetically wonderful, they are too small for the genre being crammed with far too many players and no space to breathe in-between the team fights. POIs are placed like BR funnels, forcing conflict with no room for navigation. With only a few maps available, players may quickly run out of meaningful content besides playing it for the love of PVP.

This leads to my final concern which is Bungie itself. Given their track record with Destiny 2, I am skeptical of their release cycle. With only one map slated for this year, I have serious concerns about the game's longevity. Given how short the metagame curve is it has already turned stagnant, Marathon needs a solid shake-up to survive, and it is worrying to feel this way before Season 1 is even over.
