The summons alone are troublesome since they honestly have too much health, and it doesn't help that any of their attacks are ready to rip off anywhere from a fifth to half of your health - which you can't get back except by picking up the loose souls you knock off of him, by the way!
As far as I can tell, the only way to deal with the sun attack is to kill the ghosts he spawns beforehand since one of them always drops a soul that very briefly makes you invincible. Only problem is it doesn't last very long and odds are you'll use it well before the sun attack ever happens... And similarly to Amulvaro's jellyfish gimmick, it's not very clear what you're supposed to do there.
Some tips:
- You likely have the Soldier skill tree, so I strongly suggest running Fortitude in case he nukes you and you don't have the souls (He likes doing this by the end of the fight).
- Since he disables healing (Along with another Heroic sort of), Attune every plume for damage. Simple as that.
- Some Souls give a barrier that makes you completely invulnerable. Use this to help go on the offence. If he goes for an early nuke, he often summons 2 adds that have one of these souls. That's how you avoid damage.
- Rarely dodge into him. Usually, you'll want to dodge away because the hitbox is larger on the backside of his attacks than the front. Pretty irrelevant with Turtle shield, but my advice is about general builds, not something specific that can be missed.
- Whenever summoned, Bulwark is top priority. He has ended more of my runs than Heroic Bulwark and Thalamus combined.
- His summons can be RNG heavy in the first half. He'll either summon Bulwark and Phoenix, 2 Sirad, or 2 Bysurge and Bulwark. If you get Bysurge, you've gotten the worst roll of the die, as Bulwark is summoned later, and therefore, Thalamus comes back quicker. The other two rolls are generally easy to deal with.
- His summons in the second half will either be Bulwark with red lasers or Ash. For the former, prioritise on the soul adds, since they drop more immune-to-damage souls, making Bulwark easy to deal with. With Ash, don't get spooked. When he engages, move back and jump. Slam if you mess up, but there's a rhythm with the dodging that you can get consistent. After 4 knife volleys, go hard. Thalamus tends to go back after 2 Ash attacks.
-In Eyeball Phase, keep up your shield for the bullet hell. Regardless of direction, the pellets shouldn't hit. This is similar to dealing with Endless Anger. Try to round up the demons and use your best AoE ability to kill them all. You may need Fortitude for this, but if you can do it without, you can save yourself from his nuke that usually comes after.
- Consider getting Fallen Angel's Thesis. Triple Jump and natural Energy helps.
Thank you all three for your answers. I managed to beat this mountain of salt after 72 deaths and a ragequit. I mixed up a bit of every advice you gave, pretty happy to have finally claimed back the 100%!
I'll probably get around to it too, eventually... Just not with my scythe build. Is it just me or do scythes kind of struggle in DPS in the late-game? Even with 100 Finesse, a MAXED Scythe of Restless Spirits and full +8 Ethereal armor I struggle to kill those summons before Thalamus comes back (assuming I don't screw up dodging Thalamus himself, which is very easy to do when he keeps filling the screen with things).
Can't speak about Scythe specifically, but I feel like a lot of builds are flat out "unviable" for some of the Heroic fights in late game.
Even with a +11 Longsword, using my correct build (Max STR too) and all the correct combo shenanigans I was dealing laughable damage to Thalamus and some other bosses.
That said, I'm not fond of scythes in particular. Devs stated they'll be working on it a bit so they're better in the late game/NG+, but it's generally a weak weapon class. I'd actually go so far to say it's the weakest in the current game aside from the likes of bows or whatever.
For the laughable damage output...... It's just that the guy has 70k HP. Just that.
